or you could go with a rohan outrider and do a head swap. it has a more scout / ranger look, which is what aragorn is all about.

I also want to make a gondor versio of thorongil from a ranger of the north mini.

I agree with you there. I think if anyone has unreleased models or prototypes, then illegal activity has already taken place unless GW is selling these off to personal/private collectors or the sculptor of the models is back dooring these guys out. Somehow it is off the books regardless.

not that it is important, the only reason these are wanted is because you can't have them. If they were mass produced, many of us would get them but the value would not be there. So it is better to adopt the mindset that they don't exist because GW never sold them on the market, they are failed models and there for have no value. (tell that pseudo lie to your self and then you won't care about any of these unreleased models).

Been pondering this a little..., that and the fact the Perry's quit GW recently (see seperate post) to concentrate on their own historical website minis...

Now here's where my pondering got me...

What if the Perry's did a "NOT-LOTR" range?
If it was priced sensibly, not the outrageous GW prices, would sales take off again?

Would this be possible and get round any licencing laws/restrictions (I'm no expert)?

I have certainly seen figures like "Not-Jack Sparrow" ( http://www.musketeer-miniatures.com/store.php?r=10&rule=Historical&id=34 - click on captain john finch) on the market before, so if its possible to do it with Pirates of the Caribbean, why not LOTR???

Food for thought anyway...

I believe the Perry's would spend a lot of time in court fending off GW and Saul Zaentz. Both of those companies have a long history of going to court even if they don't have a valid case, *cough, Space Marine, cough*.

Fair point... perhaps I was just dreaming as usual... ;-)

I dont think its out of the relm of possibility, but it would have to bit a range a bit more detached. It couldnt be as simple as froodoo sackins and the cohort of the braclet. Featuring Blandolf the egg shell white wizard, and the wandering ranger Hairagorn.

Black Tree Designs (if I remember correctly) had an LOTR license in the 1990s, to make wargames. When they lost the license, they kept the range with a...remarkably familiar set of names and naming conventions. There's also a deal of Intellectual Property case law floating about which touches on the LOTR IP - Saentz and/or the Estate sued the makers of Dungeons and Dragons in the 1980s. This established that "Orcs" were public domain, while Balrogs were not, for example. Dungeons and Dragons thus has our hero Drizzt fighting something called a "Balor" as a result.

So, it could be done. Or they could just belt out some compatible, if generic, fantasy miniatures: eastern tribes, orcs, barbarians, "northmen" etc.

That would be nice if they did. For consistency sake.

I think a "not-LotR" range would probably be hard for the Perry Twins to pull off, due to their previous connections with GW. I think their former employer would probably smell something fishy if a not-Gandalf and not-Boromir popped up.

eBob's fantasy range used to be a very obvious not-LotR range. There was Frodo, resting Boromir, resting Aragorn, a Ranger, Weathertop statues--eBob got some attention from GW, and we're left with Bill the Pony, Shadowfax, Barliman Butterbur (and co) and some Elven boats. The Perrys, in any case, would attract significantly more attention than eBob.

eBob has gotten away with it with his Western range (Sergio Leone's Dollar Trilogy) and Stalag Luft III (The Great Escape), and, to a lesser extent, Rebellion (early miniatures were very obviously inspired by Braveheart). Other companies have done similar, obviously--but it's different when you throw in a huge franchise like LotR and a guarded company like GW.

A generic fantasy range, sure--a fantasy range that takes obvious visual cues from Jackson's films, I'm not so sure.

I'd guess that the Perrys would rather stick with historical anyway. It seems to be what they're really passionate about.

As for where the LotR license will fall, maybe Mithril or Knight Models would pick it up; maybe it will go nowhere.

I think generic stuff like wildmen and maybe orcs would be possible, but anything else, like heroes and warriors with distinctive armour (easterlings, minas tirith etc) is impossible. But I don't think the Perrys have any interest in doing fantasy now...they have done for decades now and I think they will stick to the historical stuff which is as popular as their fantasy minis from GW. Plus there are more Napoleonics players than LOTR collectors ;)
