Smaug is a pretty nice surprise, but that price is none for me. I really hope he will be worth it for everyone who wants him or will be spending their money on him, but hey, I can almost pay the mortgage for that!

If you think it's expensive now, just imagine what its going to sell for on ebay in ten years time when the model is OOP

To put it in comparison, when the LEGO Ultimate Collectors edition first came out, it sold for $499. It now sells on Amazon for $4,500 http://www.amazon.com/Lego-Ultimate-Collectors-Millennium-Falcon/dp/B0017V21EY

Ultimately, I do think a lot of people will buy this, although most of them will probably not be SBG players.

In Plastic? That is interesting, due to the high moulding costs I didn't expect that. Is there a GW in Wiltshire? ;-)
Nevertheless I think GW has to deliver something awesome and huge to justify the high price, compared to the 389$ Geene Models Smaug and the 699$ WETA limited collectible of Smaug.

Well, I didn't see that coming. I thought we might see a forgeworld Smaug, but I'd pretty much ruled out a plastic GW kit. The only thing I guessed right was the price. I knew people were being a bit naiive when they were expecting it to be around £100.
I can't wait to see the pose. I hope it'sthis one

I was thinking the exact same thing about the pose. Would be perfect to display how f*****g awesome Smaug is!

One might imagine that high moulding costs are part of the reason he's $500. They surely don't expect to sell many of them, so they might as well go all out.

Hope it's worth it, I really do.

If Smaug really is as powerful as he's deemed to be in the movies he should be like 750. But I never know whats in GWs mind

I figured as much. Works great for me too. I'm in the middle of the application process with Reaper to be part of their equivalent of the 'Eavy Metal' team

750 points? Well, play him in a WOTR game, because a dragon only costs 400 points!

I'm guessing 1000pts, but really I don't think he's intended for gaming.

I was excited for a Smaug model, but not at a $490 price tag. I was seriously hoping for <$200, which is the price for two Mûmakil. It would be a very scaled down model, but at least that would make it more practical.

The way it sounds now it looks to be more of a collectible, which I don't really have an interest in. (not at that price tag at any rate)

Not too excited about the other (rumoured) releases this week either, maybe next week.

Smaug is a very special release but i am more excited about laketown, i have been waiting to see if GW will release them as ''armed civilians'', a model i really wanted.
I really hope they wont fail the design of sculpts because these packs of 3 is a disaster.
Any thoughts if there will even be a BOTFA starter? so many rumors about the laketown scenery cant be all false :(

What annoys me about Smaug is the fact that he is not extraordinary, (among dragons that is); therefore a stronger than the generic dragon profile is not warranted. Yet I am almost certain he will have one.

I for one will be bitterly disappointed if this Smaug is plastic. The set up costs for it must be astronomic and I think it a real shame that most of the BotFA production budget has been spent on this, leaving excellent rank and file troops to be produced in crapcast clam packs. I think the cost if this will be prohibitive for most, certainly I don't know of gannets ready to drop £300 on one kit. So far this movies releases have nothing to offer me. Sigh.

I don't care for Smaugs 2 legged design in the movies much anyway!

Good job I play and collect lots of wargames that have exciting releases!

I'd rather spend £300 on two Tabletop Workshop castles... Now that would be something!!!

That said if it is plastic, I'm happy for those who really want a Weta design Smaug, and happy for them that it won't melt if they leave it too bear the radiator!

In the words of Thorin at Bag End, 'There were
lots of dragons in the North in those days, and gold was probably getting
scarce up there, with the dwarves flying south or getting killed, and all the
general waste and destruction that dragons make going from bad to worse. There
was a most specially greedy, strong and wicked worm called Smaug.'

And then in Appendix A of the Lord of the Rings, under Durin's Folk, 'the greatest of the dragons of his day'.

I think he must have been a pretty impressive dragon even by their standards!
