I seem to recall, perhaps not on this site, but certainly locally for me, some discussion when AUJ came along that Heroes and Warriors alike were overpowered. Eventually, it turned out that, whilst potent on paper, they still had disadvantages, weaknesses, or areas that they did not excel in, balancing things out. Azog is a beast, especially against Heroes, but if he looses a fight, or gets shot at, then he's in real trouble because he has very little fate and armour. I suspect we'll see something similar here - Tauriel and co are tricksy against hordes, but a tough hero, magic or some dedicated sniping might expose their weaknesses, perhaps. Just a case of bearing in mind that they're more specialised than the LotR minis, and fighting them accordingly.

We could certainly use a review of the Noldor though - Galadhrim with thicker armour isn't really cutting it anymore.

The above is exactly how I imagined Beorm myself and I was dissapointed by P.J.'s rendition of him. But I have to say that GW's human form model is great and dispelled any concerns I had about him. SouthernDunedain did you delete the images?

Nope, they are still there, couple of pages back. I put them in spoiler tags to keep the post size down.

Are the Laketown miniatures just Warriors of Dale painted blue?

Everything looks good but I hope that Beorn's bear form looks better in person.

No, they're not. Observe that their helmets are slightly different - the Dale helmets end in a point, whereas the Lake Town helmets flare out slightly at the top. Also, cloaks, shields, different armour, and different poses.

Man, those Gundabad Orcs are shiny. I was anticipating big, scruffy Orc's like we saw during the AUJ flashback. Final judgement awaiting better pics of course but it looks like its only gonna be Mirkwood for me :)

I've got the book on order and I'll definitely be buying Tauriel and a box of Mirkwood Rangers to add into my Wood Elf army tomorrow. I'll try them out in a few games at 1k points as part of my current Wood Elf army and then decide if I want to add more. They seem fantastic but quite pricey points wise to include too many. Can still get half bows when allying a full warband of them in with 3 warbands of the current wood elves. As for the rest I'm not sure what I'll get if anything. Was planning on a spider list but with the rules being a bit underwhelming I might just buy some of the older spiders. Very much looking forward to the new release though and I think some of my regular opponents will be picking up newer stuff too so should be good to increase the variety in our games. Also looking forward to trying out the new points match scenarios and seeing if any of them make their way into next years tournament packs.

I'm actually contemplating how easy or difficult it will be to properly greenstuff a big bushy beard and slightly less "crazeh" hair on him. Below the waist he's pretty much perfect. But then again, I have something against fine cast.
Having recently broken my rule for TMFKAB (the-model-formerly known as Bolg,) and spending about an hour cleaning it up, my opinion of models which are "designed for fine cast" is that they're less disastrous than the "remastered" figures, but still have problems, just on a smaller scale. Usable, but an unreasonable amour of work for such a high priced figure. And there were still a few pieces of spiky detail missing.
Having said that, Bjorn does look like a very simple model full of round volumes, which fine cast seems to deal with better than spikes and protrusions.

But there are a lot of very high quality miniature producers in the 32mm scale which will, presumably, be appropriately out of scale for Bjorn instead of inappropriately out of scale for anything else in LotR!

So far my "to buy" list is exactly the same as you, BigDog: the book, Tauriel and a box of Mirkwood rangers which may or may not get expanded in to a full list of Mirkwood elves, depending on how I like them.

They are two different army lists. Garrison of Dale which is Girion, Captains of Dale and Warriors of Dale. You then have Laketown which is The Master, Alfred, Bard, Captains of Laketown and Laketown guard.

So technically they are 2 separate forces but there is nothing to stop you allying them together. Warriors of dale are slightly better fighters than the laketown guard and the laketown cannot take shields.

Well, I'll prob use my dalish people as a elite company of laketown (fluffwise)
Was just wondering cause there is a warrior of dale wandering around the laketowners on the preview you posted. (guess he's lost? )

I dunno, because GW figured it would look good? In the bigger picture (I cropped it only to show the laketown) there are quite a few more dale. Maybe there is some sorta alliance in the movie.

Don't know about the alliance, dale is quite... well burned to the ground for 200 years now :o

And, yeah they do look good together, I hope that maybe after the movies they'll add some more dale/laketown stuff.

Really many thanks for the pictures! :yay:

Bear Beorn looks dumb. Gundabad orcs look terrible.

Disappointment ;_;

Well, since the people of Laketown are the descendants of the people of Dale, putting them together makes a certain sort of sense. There's an odd piece of "fluff" regarding the Men of Dale - how they fight as mercenaries through the East.

Maybe the folk of Dale, those who didn't go to Laketown, dwell abroad, like the old Irish Wild Geese, fighting in foreign armies until they feel like they can go home? Means you could get yourself a Dale/Laketown army alliance that way?

Mithril's Beorn is kinda nice,

and included in this kinda nice set:

None of the pictures quite do it justice (damn you Mithril and your could-be-better webpage - though considering the difference in size between Mithril and Gw...)
