Khazad Dum Sourcebook is listed as 'no longer available'.

Hate to panic, :o but 'no longer available' is not "temporarily unavailable' or even 'out of stock.' That sounds like a Decision has been made. What's up?

If an update is on the way, great... Maybe they'd like to sell out the old sourcebooks first? (All other source & journey books can be 'shipped w/in 24 hours'). Is an update so necessary? Maybe everything is finally going into one book, like War of the Rings? That would be welcome, and drive newcomers less crazy.

Yeah and they will say " We are lucky we didn't start a few years ago..."

Getting rid of SBG will be unlikely seeing as GW extended their licence for the Hobbit. The Hobbit is mainly about small skirmishes (battle of 5 armies excluded) so I would expect there to be new SBG books to follow the book/film.

I like your logic. But what seems common sense to us SBG fans may not factor into simple Profits calculation. LOTR sales have fallen off, GW profits have never been huge. War of the Rings seems more popular. I called my nearest Official GW Franchaise and asked about Stategy Battle Game activities. There was a pause on the other end, then he said, "Oh, the skirmish game..." I hate the sound of "No Longer Available."

I do too, it is often followed by rules changes so they they can force us to buy new books.
I understand, that the new strategy will revolve around selling more models rather than books. I think they will push WOTR as well.
I will be disappointed if I don't get Trolls with sacks for the Hobbit

Keep in mind, that is ONE sourcebook out of eight (and not including Shadow &Flame, Battle of Pelennor Fields or Siege of Gondor which were all replaced) and there are three Journey books as well. Maybe Khazad-dum sold out and they didn't have any (or very few) requests for it, so it didn't make sense for them to do an entire new print run.

When the "One Rulebook to Rule Them All" is listed as no longer available, THEN we panic! :)

But it's funny, where can people legally get the rules for the Dragon and some of the dwarves now?

I guess you could look at LoME for pointcosts and then go to the GW-website and look for the stats and special rules in the LoTR articles or under the mini's.

They are pushed to promote WotR, and pretend SBG doesn't exist. I had a heck of a time getting my local store guy to leave me alone about it. I said if I wanted to play something like WotR I'd have been playing Warhammer already.
"No, they're totally different rules!"
"I realize that, but they're both formation/tray games, I'm not into that aesthetic."
"But you can play a whole game in an hour!"
"And what would be the point? It's an hour wasted on a game I don't want to play."
"..."

To his credit he has been doing escalation tournaments with SBG (starting at 300 points one month, 400 next, etc). And there is a local game festival next Feb for which I might try to organize an SBG tournament, possibly with his help.

Wow, thought this was a resurrected thread from a year ago.

Indeed, at the time, it seemed that all of the SBG sourcebooks were going out of production. They probably have. Since LOTR sourcebooks are really just glorified catalogues: this is what we're bringing out and here's why you should buy some older stuff too, War of the Ring fulfills that role admirably. And Battlehosts took care of the rest. The reason the other sourcebooks are still out is because they haven't sold out yet, or they had a limited print re-order some time ago and those haven't sold out yet.

Thing is, we don't know what the future will look like. The Hobbit is at least 18 months away, and possibly another year beyond that. War of the Ring is where its at now, and by gum it sells models for them.

GW is probably highly aware that much of their market are collectors, or old SBG players. That market can be treated with benign neglect as people fill out elements of their collection and purchase some more. There is always a new army to start, after all. Or conversion project. Or a well loved figure to try again on.

Those who game will either sort out their own arrangements for playing SBG, or suck it up and play lower point WOTR games. New small releases can be covered in White Dwarf. Problem solved.

Be mildly nice to see a new One Rulebook for the SBG with everything from WOTR and LOME statted out in it.

Post subject:  Re: Is GW giving up on SBG?!

This is yet another topic complaining about how GW will completely get rid of SBG... there always have been these topics yet SBG remains entact. Why oh why on earth would they give up on SBG if they just extended the lisence for another five years! And why do you care that they do not have Khazad Dum. There is nothing useful in Khazad Dum. Paint guides are rubbish and very general, has sample army lists which are again not useful, has scenarios which are alright but again not worth the whole book for, and it has profiles, which you can all get online. The Fellowship of the Ring and TTT book was useful because it had good painting guides, good scenarios, great terrain pieces and at their time of release you could not get hte profiles online.
