I am pretty sure that more people play Warhammer and 40k than LotR.

Wasn't always like that. In 2005-8 there was a release eery 4-5 months, which gradually got released. Then we had one release December 2010 and haven't had one after that until January 2012.

As well as being les popular, LotR was made up by Tolkien not GW so they can't just invent new history every 5 minutes.

I agree
although tolkein's world is vast and amazing (and IMO much better) 40k and warhammer have almost no boundries, I think this is why GW like them more; because they like doing whatever thay want and i think they find LoTR a bit too restrictive

i too wish for more LoTR :( :(

There is a wealth of Tolkien lore that GW could use to create new releases, but licencing and sales are what drive their decisions on what systems to invest the most time and money in.

Sad but true.

Im sure as soonas the Hobbit is out GW will have plenty of new releases.
Dwarves, dragons, elves, probably a new necromancer model and new rule book too i'd guess.
And it will all be in lovely finecast and sold at an extremely moderate price!

I actually think its ridiculous.
GW has made rules for countless new characters and units for WOTR yet they barely created any of them.
Throughout all those longs months of no new releases they could have been slowly feeding us new miniatures bit by bit, but did they? No.
Instead we were abandoned for nearly a year and still haven't received miniatures of many of the units they came up with. Not only is it painful for us collectors but it is a huge missed opportunity for GW to keep us interested and buying their figures.

GW made up Burdhur, Gulhavar, Cirion, Murin and Drar, Mardin, the named wraiths (kinda), Durburz, Druzhag, Rumil Thrydan Wolfsbane (i think) and many others. I like all of the above models/characters, and don't see why they don't just make more.

Rumil was in the book he just couldnt speak thier language so he wasnt a very big part 8)
there wasn't any of gondor's avenger bolt throwers in the book or the film either

Precisely, don't give GW the credit for Rumil.

There is also Kardush, Ashrak, Groblog, Dwellers, Black Guard, Warg Marauders, Amdur, Suladan, Hasharii, Knights of the White Tower, etc.

not to mention mordor siege bows, morgul stalkers, Castellians(?), Feral uruk hai, Vrashu, Dalamyr(?), Guards of the galadhrim court and sons of Eorl. If it goes on at this rate there will be more of GW's characters than tolkien's ones. :?
But i have to admit that i do quite like couple of GW's made up characters like Murin and Drar, they are quite cool. And I suppose Dunelending do need some kind of leader (Thyrdan wolfsbane)

King Brand+rules for rohan men to be of lake town would have me eating from gw's hand. Can't wait for hobbit!

Yes, some of GW character's (mostly the less ambitious ones) are quite nice, some others (Druzhag and Ashrak) aren't.

But Warhammer and Fordykay get new stuff every month because of three things: 1) They are even worse ripp-offs then LOTR prices, so the profit per mini is higher
2) They can be expanded endlessly with whatever GW feels like. I think GW's new mini's are largely decided by what the design department feels "this would be COOL" about this month.
3) They are definitely played more (because LOTR lacks support, which leads to more WFB and Fordykay playing, which leads to less LOTR support etc. without end).

From my inside the dark fortress of Barad-GW, a lot of new will be ramping up for the release of the Hobbit in December. Now that could be a fun warband Thorin and Dwarves~Brian

Suladan is only half made-up. In the books Theoden confronts the Serpent Lord at Pelennor Fields, but there's no specific name.

Nor does Tolkien ever call him 'the Serpent Lord'. He mentions a Haradrim Chieftain, and that the banner of Harad was a Serpent. And later says that Theoden slew the Serpent, not the Serpent Lord. In the context, use of the word serpent could just as easily refer to the routing of the Haradrim in general, by removing the head of the Haradrim army (head of the Serpent), thus Serpent means all of the Haradrim, or the banner bearer being killed. Tolkien choose 1 option out of at least 3 possibilties.

I would still agree that Suladan is at least semi-canon.

Post subject:  Re: I dont get it

Less than half-canon, very loosely related, but more justifiable than most of the others they made up.

As for not getting as much support than fantasy and 40k, Lotr doesn't have the fanbase that the others have and at the end of the day GW is a business. Also as I understand it GW and the movie making people only have the rights to Lotr and the hobbit excluding a metric ton of characters and armies that could be made if they could get the rights to them. Christopher Tolkien won't sell them in his life time though.

As for the cannon/not cannon debate, I think Cirion is cannon. Also sons of Eorl I think would be too. Eorl was a real character so I assume the sons of Eorl would just be his elite warriors or personal unit. Rumil is most definitely legit. Haldir had another brother too, but I can't remember his name off of the top of my head.
