Post subject:  These fangled new washes?

It has been a long time since I last did any real painting. I decided to paint the Blood Angels (and eventually the gene stealers) that came with the most recent Space Hulk game. Only now I find that Citadel Paints have changed a fair bit, with these new washes. I have read that a 50/50 mix of Badab Black and Devlan Mud is a "miracle" wash. Sounds good to me, as I have no experience with 40K figures.

I have painted my Blood Angel with Blood Red. Do you think a mix is advised? Some have said they use Devlan Mud only, no Badab Black. I am not at all sure which way to go, and I don't want to experiment.

Also, do you recommend highlighting Blood Red with one of the orange colours? I was thinking of perhaps a few light touches, but I don't know if it makes it too orange.

Thank you for your time.

I don't paint 40k at all but when I painted my dragon ( he's red) I washed him with just devlin mud straight over the blood red then highlighted with blood red again followed by a slight highlight of blazing orange. Hope this helps. Devlin mud IS the true miracle wash 8)

These washes in general are god pieces.

For example. WFB side, my dwarves all get a liberal Devlin Mud wash after their basecoats and they're pretty much ready there not needing more highlighting. My empire, my flagellants start with a white prime job, do flesh and other ancillary pieces and then double mud wash for the clothing.

For SBG, my Army of the dead have a very simple paint scheme. White Prime, Blue Wash, Green Wash. As a note switching the color order does make a difference on these guys.

Thanks, guys.

Do you dilute the Devlan Mud? I read about someone using it straight out of the pot and preferring it like that. Instinctively, this feels too strong for my liking. I suppose I will have to do some experimenting to find the result I'm looking for.

Its really easy to control the spread compared to the old inks which just ran everywhere - I next to never dilute the wash unless I'm just wanting to alter the colour of a model or slightly weather or age its appearence 8)

Yep, I normally don't dilute. They control very well, so you can put on a thick or thin layer easilly enough.
BTW, long time no see tobold, I'm glad to see your still in the hobby.... :)

Tobold,

I've found the washes to be good as is, and orange is a powerful color for a highlight on red armor. Also, because you said that you didn't want to waste time on experimenting, here's GW's own guide for painting the termies in Space Hulk:

Hi Mark, great to hear you are getting back to painting! I have used Devlan Mud (undiluted) to shade my Blood Angels terminators, not as wash but just painted it in the shadows. For edge highlights I have added some light brown to Blood Red, it was probably Vermin Brown, which is quite light and has a bit reddish tint. I have also glazed the marines with diluted Baal Red, it somehow makes the red look deeper, but you need to be careful to not use it so much that it behaves like wash. The idea is just to cover the red armour with a transparent red layer that shows all the shades and highlights through it. Yes, the new washes are miracle makers. :)

I have some photos of them in my blog, http://pasiminis.blogspot.com.

Hi Pasi and Bart! It's nice to be back.

Thanks for the link, Jamros. Nice avatar. Boromir's character has been revived in my memory with Sean Bean having played Eddard Stark in Game of Thrones.
