Post subject:  replacing brushes
I was wondering how often you guys replace your brushes and what is the best way to tell when it is time to.

It depends! When I stop using my W&N size 0 for the detail stuff, because the bristles start to spread out in every direction, I use the old one for mixing paint etc and get a new one for the detailed stuff. For me, the time to replace it has come when it stops doing what I tell it to do ;) With the right treatment this kind of brush lasts very long, up to 6 or more months in my case...

That's the exactly correct time. Well said! :)

When it's no longer sharp you will notice. Painting will start feeling like colouring the miniature with a blunt pencil or marker. Of course with a bad brush it's like that from the very beginning...

Good quality brushes (W&N series 7 or Cotman) last a couple of years in my use even if I don't bother using anything other than water and liquid soap to clean them.

Besides the W&N series 7 I have also found the Raphael 8404 to be very good. I only use the good brushes when I am not batch painting. While batch painting I have found the Reaper kolinsky and Privateer Press studio brushes ( although I can not find the P3 ones in their web store at the moment ). Just remember to use clean water every time and I recommend the W&N brush cleaner/restorer for every day after paint cleaning and a cellulose/lacquer thinner for heavy cleaning.

Just tried out my new Rosemary & Co 10 0 brush, series 33,its superb, painted Azog eyes.

I have been using Rosemary brushes for a couple of years now and really do have recommend them, better than Windsor and Newton and a lot cheaper.
