I have a mind to make my Wood Elf captain (painting conversion of the wood elf with his hand in the air and a bow), by doing some writing on the bottom of his cloak. Does anyone have tips on how to do this, since it's my first time?

Paint the cloak with the basecoat colour you are using and apply your chosen wash if using one. Freehand your writing on initially in a darker colour than you want the writing to be - for instance if you want the writing to be bleached bone when finished paint it first with snakebite leather - any mistakes can be rectified by painting over with the cloak basecoat colour. Once you have the basic freehand on the cloak and your happy with it go over it with the lighter colour of your choice leaving the darker colour showing in recess's and folds. Once done highlight the rest of the cloak with your chosen colour carefully picking your way round the freehand writing.

Patience and good luck.

And if I were planning to use gold (of which I only have one tint)? Could I just do basecoat, writing, wash (thus darkening the writing as well), highlight?

Thanks for the advice, by the way.

yeh if you were using gold writing then you could paint the writing on in gold first then wash and then highlight that would work fine. What colour is the cloak going to be that you are thinking of freehanding the writing on?

Thanks for the help, just finishing the warband and I'll try it afterwards.

Dark blue (french Napoleonic uniform blue :-D )

Yep gold will paint nicely onto dark blue for the initial freehand. The reason i asked is if the cloak had been a really light colour such as space wolves grey or the like then it is someties easier to paint the initial freehand with black and then the gold to give it some contrast.

Good luck
