Post subject:  How to wash Auric Armour Gold (Burnished Gold)?

Hello everyone

I'm painting some Haldir's Elves and was wondering what should i use to wash Auric Armour Gold (or Burnished Gold by old names). The washes I have at my disposal are Drakenhof Nightshade (dark blue), Biel Tan Green, Carroburg Crimson, Seraphim Sepia, Reikland Fleshade, Nuln Oil (black and Agrax Earthshade. I'm using Runefang Steel (Mithril Silver) for my silver.

I always tend to wash gold with a sepia colour which I think works well to enrich the base gold colour, give it a highlight of the gold mixed with silver (50/50) and you're off.

I'll second that. Gryphon Sepia always works magic on all golds. Use it.

Sepia makes it too bronzish, it starts to look like Gehennas Gold (shining gold). As for the highlight do you mean the edges?

Yes just the edges.

I would use numerous colours to create thinned glazes. That way you can add some real depth and definition to the figure.
Dark glazes like blue in the deep shadows to lighter toned toward the extremities.

Here's my tips for good golds =

For a more bronzed gold =
Basecoat = Rhinox Hide and Runelord Brass (1:1)
Layer = Auric Armour Gold
Wash = Skrag Brown and Nuln Oil (1:2)
Highlight = Auric Armour Gold and Runefang Steel (1:1)

For a more natural gold =
Basecoat = Iyanden Darksun (not sure on the modern equivalent - I was fortunate enough to have 3 pots of the stuff before it was discontinued and still have 2 left)
Layer = Auric Armour Gold
Wash = Loren Forest and Nuln Oil (1:1)
Highlight = Auric Armour Gold

For a very subtle gold =
Basecoat = Administratum Grey
Layer = Auric Armour Gold and Runefang Steel (1:1)
Wash = Auric Armour Gold and Nuln Oil (1:1)
Highlight = Runefang Steel

Obviously it depends what effect you're after, but personally, for High Elves I'd go with the second technique. I have used it for any golden parts of my Mirkwood Rangers and Palace Guards and it really compliments the colours and gives an Elven quality to the metals. A bronze gold looks too Dwarven or Haradrim, and the subtle gold personally makes me think of Rohan.
