I've been under the impression that the hero may not, this is supposed to represent them being injured or something like that, and their company trying to save them from the enemy. It's been so long since I played Battle Companies, damn that was fun. |

It isn't clear in the rules. We've played it that the hero must stay in the box... |

Looking at it again though, it makes more sense that he's just been seperated, he's still got some guys with him. I would err on the side that he can move. |
