Favourite Dwarf?

Well who is it? I would say Dwalin, he just looks and speaks so bad ass...

I really despise Thorin so not him. I think I would have to go with Balin because he is the most aware of the whole situation and is always helping out Bilbo

I also join the Bofur-worship. He's a genuine nice guy, and he's funny too. Plus, he fights with a practical tool/weapon - a pickaxe!

Ori was actually my least favourite of the dwarves, because he seemed like such an ignorant and inexperienced fool. Plus, he came to kill a dragon carrying JUST A SLINGSHOT (and a knife). I mean, other guys (Dwalin) bring two axes, a massive hammer and a knife, and he comes with effectively nothing.

Are we talking film-wise or book-wise?

Book-wise it'd be Kili Because I personally think he cares most about Bilbo (him and his brother nearly volunteered to go into the tunnel first instead of Bilbo) and I think he has a nice, young, friendly character.

Film-wise, Bofur. Funny, yet also quite sincere in places. Also an actually sensible, practical book-like weapon.

It's a tricky one this. One the one -hand given the length of the hobbit, there was very little time to develop the dwarves characters and I think Tolkien might have only half-formulated their character beyond the ones essential for the plot to develop.

In the film, I think PJ has gone on record as trying to visually give the characters a distinct look.

So from a film perspective, I think I enjoy them all, mainly due to PJ's visualisations. I do have a soft spot for Balin though.

As regard the book , I choose Thorin. As well as being the most realised dwarf in the text, the complex nature of the character makes him head and shoulders above the others. I feel the whole point of the book is as much about Thorin's journey as Bilbo's, even down to his final realisation of the harm he had done and the ability to give up his life to make amends.

In some ways this mirrors Boromir's realisation in FoTR so Tolkien might have chosen to use this sort of literary device again in a later book.

Thorin truly is a great piece of literary characterisation, a complex character who undergoes an incredible journey... I think this has been played well so far in the movie too. A character who although clearly flawed to the audience, you would still follow into battle.

Any one who stands their ground at the Nirnaeth Arnoediad and nearly guts one of the most powerful dragons in Tolkien History with a Knife as his last act of defiance, deserves praise.

Did they all come unarmed in the Hobbit book? I know they all had small knives on them, which they used to fight the spiders in Mirkwood, but I assumed they had weapons and lost them during one of the many times they were captured.
