A typically silly question here; what coloured primer do you primarily use?

Of course some models would be more suited to a specific colour (Nazgul=black), but for the majority of your other miniatures, what is the base colour you normally use or are used to using?

I use grey because it isn't bright like white, but still light, so it's not too dark and you can see the detail.

For me it all depends on the model. I really like Imperial Primer and have painted some fantastic models using this having only recently started using it, I find the consistancy perfect, it covers and does not oscure details. I also find that it exposes all of the details. I really am a big fan this primer.

Was black for years and years, but since January I've been using combination black with light white spray from above. Twin priming or whatever you like to call it.

I use a zenithal pre-shade, or whatever else you want to call it. The colours depend on the model, but I try to create warm/cold contrast. For example, a dark maroon with a light green, or dark brown and light blue.

I used to use black a lot. I have painted only a handful of models in the past year or so, and I usually just skip the undercoat.

Black for myself. Although I'm experimenting with white primer as well. For strong contrasts I'll do both

The air version of "Matt German Camouflage Black Brown" ?

Cause i d like to experiment too with dark browns as base. Gives nice highlights on skin colours i suppose and generally an earth approach to the colours.

Grey with a black wash these days. Recesses and tricky to reach places are still black (although not quite as hard dark as with a black primer), while lighter colours look just a bit better. Makes it easier to appreciate detail too. Only disadvantage is that it barely shows on some grey plastic figures...

I use which ever i feel like for the day. Black, white or grey. I rotate thru. If i really want to add contrast to the mini i'll do the gray with a black wash followed by the zenthial highlight thing.

I use white for good guys and black for bad, I think it helps in the lightness and darkness of the forces.

I used to prime the faces with white, then the rest of the model with black, now its just black

I'm surprised by the number of people who don't use white. I enjoy what a white primed mini looks like. I like to think of it thusly: white primed minis will yield something that looks like it came from the video game Fable. Very bright and fairy tale-ish. Black primed minis will yield a result that looks like it came out of Skyrim. Dark and "realistic." Which means it boils down to what you want out of the mini. Real-ish or sureal

Thus you nailed exactly why i prefer black under-coats.I want the realistic look not a cartoonish one. Doesn't fit LOTR IMHO

Priming in white doesn't yield a cartoonish mini. Lining the mini with black yields a cartoonish mini, as you would then have cartoon black lines. But yes, priming in white can yield a surreal looking mini. Here is a mini from a tutorial i found where the painter primed one in black and one in white. Can you tell which is which? It isn't terribly difficult once you know what you are looking for, but the point is, white or black, or grey, in the end, it doesn't make that big of a difference.

By cartoonish I meant less realistic. IMO it takes far more work to achieve realistic color with the white priming. The point on black lines is correct of you leave any primer exposed, which you never should
