"There must be something worth living for
There must be something worth trying for
Even some things worth dying for
And if one man can stand tall
There must be hope for us all
Somewhere, somewhere, in the spirit of man..."

Beth in the song Spirit of Man from War of the Worlds.

“Watch out he's winding the watch of his wit, by and by it will strike.”
- The Tempest

“At this hour
Lie at my mercy all mine enemies.”
- The Tempest

"Be not afeard; the isle is full of noises,
Sounds, and sweet airs, that give delight and hurt not.
Sometimes a thousand twangling instruments
Will hum about mine ears; and sometime voices,
That, if I then had waked after long sleep,
Will make me sleep again: and then, in dreaming,
The clouds methought would open, and show riches
Ready to drop upon me; that, when I waked,
I cried to dream again.”
- The Tempest

This guy (Stannis) is awesome, and full of quotes :-D

"... Lord Too Fat To Sit a Horse"

Stannis, about Wyman Manderly, not the best quote exactly but very memorable.

"Who holds the money, who holds the need
Who holds the strings of misery or the purse of greed
And the gunmen reap while the gangsters sow
And law is cheap when the smugglers go

Give us peace in our time
Give us peace in our time
While I have a life to live
Then I have no life to give
Give us peace in our time"

Yup. He should sit the Iron Throne.

But Frey should burn in hell. Not for killing Robb, for breaking guest right and so killing 8000 years of tradition.

All the Frey hatred is unnecesary however. 75% of the Freys are very nice people and/or completely innocent.

I spoilered this, you should do the same. Or certain fans will be crying into their cups.

Oh, blast. I keep forgetting about spoilering. Sorry, all!

The only nice Freys we see are Olyvar, Roslin and Ser Stevron. All the others seem to be the least-nice persons in the series. Not counting Joffrey and Cersei, that is. I mean, Walder sr. is a man who just feeds of grudges and imagined slights, Hosteen is a hot-headed idiot, Aenys an arrogant [word deleted], the same goes for Rhaegar, the one Uncat hanged was a drunk and an idiot, Amerei is a whore, Ryman an incompetent, overly self-assured fool, etc., etc., etc.

I stand with my point, the Freys must die. In fact, Robb should just have laid siege to the Twins (with Bolton's army on the other side), they couldn't have lasted long that way.

What you said about a couple of those is a little exaggerated. We haven't actually met most of them. Roose and Ramsay Bolton are more evil than they are, as is Grgfor Clegane, Joffrey, Cersei, Euron Greyjoy,Qyburn etc. Of course, I don't like most of the Freys anyway. Walder is the only one of the not so nice ones I like, and I cannot abide people's overly zealous Frey hatred. I do like Roose and Tywin, and Walder as characters, but I don't like the rest of the villains. (I don't count Varys as one)

On topic:

"I am not without mercy," said the man who was famously without mercy."

Not sure if this one has been said (paraphrasing):

"She sired the child with her own father?! I am glad you sent them away, this is not King's Landing"
-Stannis

He had entered the part of the city reserved for the temples. On all sides of him they glittered white in the starlight-snowy marble pillars and golden domes and silver arches, shrines of Zamora's myriad strange gods. He did not trouble his head about them; he knew that Zamora's religion, like all things of a civilized, long-settled people, was intricate and complex, and had lost most of the pristine essence in a maze of formulas and rituals. He had squatted for hours in the courtyard of the philosophers, listening to the arguments of theologians and teachers, and come away in a haze of bewilderment, sure of only one thing, and that, that they were all touched in the head.

Conan the Barbarian, if I am not seriously mistaken, Curufinwë. I like the books. Some of the language is a bit old-fashioned (who talks seriously about mighty thews these days) but some of the stories are very, very good.

You're correct it is one of the Conan Stories.

Of course, Ramsay, Cersei and Joffrey, Qyburn and Gregor are far worse. I never said they shouldn't die slowly and painfully or fully deserved what they got.

Roose and Tywin aren't evil IMO. Just machiavellian power politicians. (did I mention I like machiavellian power politicians). They don't do evil deeds for the sake of it, they do it because there's a profit in it. They are never more merciless then necessary, but also never too merciful.

Euron we don't really know anything about except from Victarion, who isn't really the most reliable source.

I think House Frey fully deserves every bit of hate they get. As I mentioned, not for backstabbing the Starks (they had that coming, and were too stupid for words to believe Walder was willing to forgive them with nothing but an apology. I still think that's quite a plot hole.), but for breaking one of the few rules of war that still were universally honoured. You just don't kill your guests. Ever. People despise the Rat Cook for doing so to a prince who had murdered his son. Compared to that, breaking a wedding pact is nothing.

Er, I don't know what alternatives versions of ASOIAF you have been reading, but

Roose Bolton
is definately evil. Way more evil than

the Freys
.

Just, check out this juicy quote, which is definately worthy of the title of this thread:

"Don't make me rue the day I raped your mother!"
- Roose Bolton to Ramsay

Which if you want to somehow argue he is still not evil, I will expand:

Click to: Show
The reason he raped this woman, and had her husband killed too I think was because she didn't let him sleep with her on her wedding day with her husband. Then, there's the fact that his telling of his son, points more to hiding behaviour, like what he himself had done, not about stoppin. Also, he more than imples that he has practices skinning people alive.

Still, think he's not evil? Whilst his son is clearly the more ovrt psychopath,
Click to: Show
Roose
himself is a cleverly reserved sociopath.

A very obvious one:

"The leaves were long, the grass was green,
The hemlock-umbels tall and fair,
And in the glade a light was seen
Of stars in shadow shimmering.
Tinuviel was dancing there
To music of a pipe unseen,
And light of stars was in her hair,
And in her raiment glimmering.

There Beren came from mountains cold,
And lost he wandered under leaves,
And where the Elven-river rolled.
He walked along and sorrowing.
He peered between the hemlock-leaves
And saw in wonder flowers of gold
Upon her mantle and her sleeves,
And her hair like shadow following."

Et cetera, et cetera.

OK, the rape was rather evil, but beyond that, there's nothing truly evil or bad he does. He's just a master politician, playing, as Lady Dustin said, a mildly diverting game with the lives of others. The Freys, on the other hand, are a nest of intrigue, murder (under guest right, no less), incest (Black Walder) and whores (Amerei). Sorry, but I don't like them, especially as they're so petty-evil, if you get what I mean. There's no higher goal behind it, just Walder Frey's injured pride and the power struggle amongst his sons/grandsons/(Oooh, naughty word)/other progeny. All the others are going somewhere with it, except Cersei.

Post subject:  Re: Best Quotes

Your definition of evil is quite niche,

Click to: Show
Roose's actions prove he is actually evil regardless fo what you think, he is just clever at hiding it. His evil is ever present. It is not just a raping action that makes him evil, it is his attitued towards it. How can you say that he is less evil than the Freys? Walder is just a spoilt old man who thinks he acn dp what he likes, in fact the only Frey who is evil is Black Walder, but Rosse is one of the most evil in the series, just not the same kind of evil as Joffrey, Ramsay etc, all Amerie does is sleep with men and you think she is worse than a man who rapes women for pleasure? And Hosteen etc are just a little arragont, are they worse than a guy who, like his son flays people alive?

I might post links to iother people proving he is evil on another forum if I get chance later.
