I suppose my main influences are Norse mythology and Icelandic Sagas...
However, read any of the Icelandic sagas and you see where Tolkien was inspired...

Nick any of my ideas and I will get angry :!: :!:

Have to say: I went to Iceland last year and was Inspired myself (by both mythology and nature). The Scrimners (giant, evil bird-like creatures who master a certain level of dark sorcerery) by example are based on someting I heard some people talking about in Iceland. Forgot about what exactly, but I was immediately inspired so I just wrote my own version of it.

I wish to go to Iceland at some point as I watched the BBC programmes recently about the place and was smitten!

I've always wanted to write my own novel, I've just never had a good enough idea to warrant putting in the time. Who knows, maybe one day one will drop into my head :?

It's funny you should say that as the day after I posted that post, I started writing ideas down and now have a full plot idea written down and I've started working on the details for background history, characters, locations etc. It's just as soon as I posted it, it made me want to write something, so I guess I worked harder for the ideas.

I'll work on it a bit more and get a prologue written up. I'll share it with people then and ask for their feedback. Can't guarantee when that'll be though, with other things it could take me quite some time.

My brother hates any form of strategy games, including boardgames, leaving me with tons of unused wargames, gathering dust. This, and this only, is the reason why I play at a GW store!!

Ps: he does have some WHF, just to show his friends

When I was in high-school, I started kind of a diary thing which then turned into a novel. Finished it a few years back but can't bring myself to edit it, because once I click there and start, it's just delete all the way and there will be nothing left soon. So I leave it. That's basically what I have now - a silly written thing that needs loads of editing. Not anywhere near it, though.

Just noticed this topic. Now my novel can be found in thousands of places. Sometimes a page or ten written down on paper, then another page or ten in a word doc. I ticked 'finished but not published', but I'm sure that when I now try to gather it, I'll change hundreds of things in the story. Happend before.
Now there are some questions I'd like to ask my fellow OR novelists.
1) Where and when do you get 'inspired' to write some pages for your novel ? Or do you just sit down and say: "Now I gonna wright something down!"
2) Is it visible you were inspired by lotr (I think we all were) ?
3) What was your main idea / character ?
4) What races does it include (uruks/wargs/halflings ?!)

No, I'm not some sort of intervieuwer who's gonna make money with this when you've published your books! :-)

K

"Novel" turned more into a novella. Basically I doubt there's enough substance in my idea to extend it all the way to "novel length," so I eliminated the chapter titles and it is now an extended short story. Progress is very slow, and I have gone back and changed minor details to make the story a little less unnecessarily dramatic.

1) To respond to the above questions--I was inspired to write this based on my love of the Western film genre, especially Spaghetti Westerns and Clint Eastwood westerns. Much of the details and story of the novel are inspired by a events in my personal life, including my recent move to Texas, and a basic plot I randomly imagined one day.
2) No. In fact, as mentioned before, this is not a fantasy novel at all--any connections with it to Tolkien would be very far-reaching. I would say two authors that influenced me the most on this project would be Charles Portis and Emily Bronte--but I don't think their influence is very visible (that is, True Grit and Wuthering Heights).
3) The main character is Louis. My brother's middle name is Luis, so I "Americanized" or "Anglicized" it, and much of the basis for Louis is my brother. However, when it came time to write, I noticed Louis is much more like me, drawing from my experiences, than he is like his namesake. In a sentence, Louis is a miner in Darwin, Texas, and is in love with a girl named Lydia, but doesn't feel like he can support her financially, and has been holding off marrying her until he can acquire some more money--which leads him on a bounty collecting mission with two other miners named Jack and Everton.
4) Not applicable :)

Oh, hi Jamros. Raggbur, I never noticed your questions, I will answer them too

1) I was inspired by all the fantasy drawings and fantasy comic I drew when I was younger, which were inspired by a variety of fantasy books and films (guess which was the most prominant)
2)There are some visable links to LOTR.
3)My main idea was originally my chief villian who UI based on all of my favouruite vuillians nad some of my favourite good guys.
4)Races inlude; humans, elves, dwarves, orcs, demons, spirits, trolls, wolves, dragons, faerites, sabour-toothed rabbits (see Monty Python for more details), spiders etc...

And I have a question, who has finished?

Chapter 2 started yesterday... Because of my illness I got 'some' influence and made the day of the protagonist raining and cold expanding my chapter in the process...Poor protagonist :)
