When I first started, I used Scorched Brown, until I discovered Bestial Brown, then I went back and repainted the old ones and have used it ever since. It's what GW used in their catalogues, which worked well enough for me. A friend of mine just has black rims, but to me they look unfinished.

Depends. I use washers for everything, but I also choose basing colours to go with a theme.

Wintery orcs of Mount Gram? Codex Grey on the base, extra snow. Traditional heroes? Bestial brown* Riders of Rohan - Scorched Brown. Gondorian forces - a very, very dark brown (I wanted to give this idea of Gondor having rich dark earth in reference to some classical Greek poetry I read that one time). Mordor? Black, I think. I have some ambitions towards some sort of dark grey-y green for Mirkwood, whenever I get around to that.

I use Steel Legion Drab on my base rims, but if I ever did some in a snowy/grey environment I would go with Mechanicus Standard Grey or black rims.

My goblins/orcs have a grey rim, everyone grassy has a brown rim and my WOMT have white rims to match their white cobble stone base. I like painting the rims like this as it helps blend them into the terrain, contributing to the illusion.

I buy cheap acrylic paint in a tube and use that, pretty close to scorched brown. One tube lasts forever too.

I used to use bestial brown, I'm now on Vallejo Beasty Brown which is nearly identical.

Agreed.

From the beginning, I used bestial brown for the bases, but because bestial brown has been discontinued, I use mournfang brown. It looks pretty much like bestial brown:

Put me down for Scorched Brown, or its equivalent. That's what I started using, and it's too late to change now!

I think black does have a particular classy look and I don't think it looks unfinished but I'm still not sure about it. I think it looks too display-y. It makes models look like show pieces and while that looks good for show pieces it's a bit weird on a scenic table top. (Of course that's just my opinion!)

Steel legion drab for everything.

I use Dark Flesh (most of the time) and Bestial Brown (or whatever the equivalents are now). I like the warm earthiness of Dark Flesh.

I like the 1st one, works well with the painted mini.

I started off using Scorched Brown and moved along to Bestial Brown. Then moved on to using just black as i felt it made the minis on top stand out more, made them pop out on the tabletop a bit more

Exactly. I find black to really make the mini and base stand out, and you never have to worry about your matching base rim colour not matching if you play on a table other than your normal one. So, my vote would be for black, but, barring that, I say the second one. I like the look of that dark brown. My second option would be the first colour. I don't like either of the red-ish ones.

I join the "black looks unfinished" people.

Myself, I use Kommando Khaki (a very bad decision I made long ago, and I won't repaint all my bases). A recommendation would be Scorched Brown, I've used it on my WOII bases and it works really well.

Bestial Brown is the way forward. No matter the colour of the base, I always used that, ever sice my forst Mordor Orcs starter box 8)

This is an interesting thread - well I've done numerous styles and combinations on the base and its rim over the years but finally settled for Scorched brown (now rhinox hide) and did a "big base repaint" to make them all the same more or less.
I wanted it to be fairly quick too since i had to rebase a good couple of hundred minis and also, i find it a bit boring lol.

Seeing the black rims though, I think I may have do them like that from now on they look great.

heres how my scheme looks:

I use Dark Flesh for my Good Armies and Bestial Brown for evil. Not sure why, that's just how I started doing it. I bought an extra pot of each just for basing. :D

I use a Folkart (or Americana) color called Cinnamon, which is a perfect match for Bestial Brown. At 49 cents for 2 ounces you can't go wrong.
