i see what you mean about the highlighting. it looks shockingly bright in my pics but in real life it is much more subtle (though still not perfectly blended)

@ all painters and collectors of elves: we musn't let the goblin thread take over! its already had a huge number of views and posts considering the time its been out for. we must KEEP POSTING ELF PICS!!!

agincourt777, your Glorfindel is looking awesome! And the face on your Galadriel is really well done. The shading on her robe does look a little stark, but these are very close up photos and I'm sure it looks great on the tabletop. Nice work! 8)

And Feanorthenoldor, nice guard and captain! Those will go great with the rest of your force that you've showed us.

didnt want to start a whole new thread so thought that this would be an appropriate one to ask how to paint high elf armour. i have 100 ready to be painted so don't want anything time consuming. washes and dry-brushes ftw!

i've tried the same colour scheme as my galadhrim but it just doesn't look right- i need a bright gold rather than a bronze.

@FeanortheNoldor: would love to see you're whole army together. post an army pic!

If you are wanting to reproduce the look from the movies then I suggest using Woodland Scenics Green Undercoat as a wash over Shining Gold. It is a VERY simple process (as you requested) and will give you a faithful representation of Peter Jackson's version.

A guy at my local GW told me to basecoat the armour mithril silver, and then wash it three times with Gryphonne Sepia. I tried it, and it works great!

It looks nice and clean and the armour looks good. I would suggest it's time to start adding a touch of shade and a highlight.
The horse would be better based with a grey, perhaps Codex grey then add white to work your way up the muscles so you have pure whit on the highest points.
Then use this principal on the rest of the figure.

Don't do too many highlights to start with, it's a progressive thing, but it will improve your results.

Keeping the paints thin also. I use roughly 1 part paint to ten parts water and increase the water two fold on washes / glazes, but at this stage you just need to add a couple of layers and you will start to see the difference.

Also think of black lining. This is adding a thin black line between each colour. It makes the transition between areas clearer.

My gallery may give you some ideas or look at the top lads like Onyx, Tidoco (great article on Rohan), MacGothmog, etc.

Good luck but you have the basis there to really start moving on and developing your skill

reply to gandalf the grey,

first i do water down my paint for every color, then i do layers, also the pic is kind of bad,
for the armour, i use gyphronne sephia first, then devlan mud on top of that, then devlan mud for the face and hands followed by highlights, then i wash the silver cape with badab black then highlight it will chainmail silver.
also, i don't have a codex grey paint, so i just used skull white, still, i looks really good, again the pic is kind of bad.

when you are talking about the black line, do you mean actually paint a black line between every color? What effect does that do if you do that?

thanks for the comments

oh that's right, becasue i don't have any codex greys or anything like that, should i just put a wash of badab black over the white on the horse, then highlight it wil skull white from there?

thanks

If you dont have any greys, try mixing some black and white to fit. You want a mid/light grey colour to use as the shaded area. Then by increasing the white you will pick out the detail at the highest points and give the figure some definition

ok, my plan is to go to GW, in a couple of weeks, get a copy of the Battlehosts, and get astronomican grey, codex grey, and fortress grey..

these will help me with my galadhrim horses

As for the black lining, check out the link below.

It must be one of the widest used links on this forum as the result is simply majestic
