Well would say a safe bet is to go with some greens and browns, which ones you choose exactly are up to you ad depend on the look you wanna achieve. I would also go for some grey and maybe some dheneb stone which looks cool as a cloak color.

Hope this helps.

If your going for Games Workshop then include
Fortress Grey - great to use to highlight a dark colour for a duskier finish
Catachan Green - Not as bright as the other greens
Bestial Brown - For wood
Scorched Brown - base coat for wood and an all round must have
Boltgun Metal - Er for metal
Mithril Silver - Mixed with Boltgun for highlights
Devlan Mud and or Badab Black for shading
Bleached Bone - For highlighting
Chaos Black - A must have
Red Gore / Blood Red - For Gimli
Snakebite Leather - Legolas
Shining Gold - For gold and use Mithril Silver for highlighting

As you say you are new so I kept the list down to try to give you a good base and still have chance to experiment with some highlights and shading.
From these you can soon build your collection.

I tend to basecoat with Skull White but Chaos Black will be fine to start as it is colour I rarely use. You can use Bleached Bone and Fortress Grey to do that.

Good luck
