I saw in the books that you can equip Gil-Galad with a shield and I heard of people gluing shields to his back, giving him a defense 8, and I was wondering if anyone has a picture of this or know where I can find one. I'd like to see it before I try it. Thanks. 8)

Easiest way is to steal one from a high elf spearman and glue it on. Or you can use one to make a copy using modelling putty, like in this article: kb.php?a=56

My friend used one from a spearman and it looked pretty good, but I would consider modelling a leather strap with greenstuff, if you can, and then putting the shield on.

Don't know about pictures of it though.

Erunion has a Gil-Galad picture with a shield in this thread if you haven't seen it yet: viewtopic.php?f=30&t=16893

That's right, you have competition now for who's the #1 good samaritan!

And I'm looking at mckeem's new avatar and Gandalf reminds me of a cop with that flashing light and his white cruiser Shadowfax. No wonder the Nazgul hightailed it.

Thanks for your help guys. I'll probably end up gluing one on. I actually got an extra shield in a blister I have been saving for just this and I'm pretty sure I'm going to go through with it. Now it's just a matter of doing it. The only problem I have with those pictures is Gil-Galad's armour isn't gold. But it at least gives me a decent idea.

You might want to check out WETA Workshop's (the movie costume designers) website for their 'official' Gil-galad shield design. Hang oooon... here:
http://www.wetanz.com/gil-galad-s-miniature-shield/from/brand

Maybe this will give you an idea how to paint it. :)

Edit: Alternatively, if you want to keep closer to Tolkien's description of the shield, just paint it silver with a few star shaped reflections:

Gil-galad was an Elven-king,
Of him the harpers sadly sing:
the last whose realm was fair and free
between the Mountains and the Sea.

His sword was long, his lance was keen,
his shining helm afar was seen;
the countless stars of heaven's field
were mirrored in his silver shield.

Can you do me a favor mckeem if it's possible please. When you're finish painting your mini and before you glue the shield, can you place the shield on the left forearm temporarily by using a bit of gum or tape (or something that wouldn't ruin the paint or don't paint the forearm at all before hand) and take quick photos of it at different angles and post them up on here. I would like to see how the shield would look on the front and how much sculpture detail will be covered up.
