Post subject:  Other Miniature sites that can be used for SGB?

Hey guys.

I am looking for sites which sell other figures that are the same size as LOTR miniatures so I can give my army a 'personalised' look and feel. Could anyone recommend any sites for my please?

Thanks in advance, I will check out all sugguestions.

Thanks, these are great!

Do they work with Citadel Paints?

Yep, work just the same. The Gripping Beast metals need to be cleaned a bit as they feel 'greasy' but I love how they paint up. Plus if you buy the Gripping Beast Plastics, you get a heck of a lot of spares

Sounds good, I actually have two wizard models (too big for SBG) that need cleaned up and they could look great. With the spares I will probably use as conversion practice etc.

Also, those Vikings would look great as Dundelings!

Thunderbolt Mountain's 30 mm humans and elves:

I have the "Human Female Warrior" as a shield maid of Rohan and she fits very nicely with the Rohan range. TBM minis are more realistically proportioned than GW's LotR so they look a bit thin and tall with small heads.

Now that I managed to get all four high elf spearman poses, I mean to continue growing my HE army with TBM's high elves. I guess that with a similar paint scheme they will look good together.

Thanks for that. Those are lovely figures on that website.

I really love the goblins riding the wolves. I think i'll purchase some of those in the future.

I've been looking into some alternates as well. Both Gripping Beast and Wargames Factory have Viking Huscarls/Hirdmen and Saxon Thegns. I'm wondering which figures people feel would be more appropriate for Rohirrim vs those that work better as Dunlendings? Anything that works well for wildmen?

I'd look for you but i'm no expert when it comes to these websites so I will leave it to the 'experts'.

Good luck with your search, if you purchase anything please make sure you make a WIP so I can follow your progress. ;)

For Rohan, any Northern European figure ranges could do but remember that you will need mounted figures as well as infantry. Gripping Beast do mounted figures but their horses are a little funny looking. Saxons, Vikings, Germans could all be used and, arguably so could some of the Normans. Wargames factory come with a lot of spares and that is why I bought some. Gripping Beast plastics are worth a box just for the weaponry and do fit in with Rohan plus GB do some great heroes (Heroes of the Viking Age)

For Dunlendings, this is a personal choice. Do you want them to look like the wildmen in the film? As in the book with almond shaped shields? I imagine the war leaders to be armed in scavanged armour and in skins in which case a few beserker type vikings would be good. Also some of the 'topless' wargames factory figures would fit in. Anything really norse.

Some Saxons from GB (proxy dunlendings)

and finally, some great wildmen!

Thanks for the reply!

I was basing my Dunlendings off of figure like Thrydan Wolfsbane and their other Dunlending Warriors -

They clearly have the whole Viking look down, even moreso than the Rohirrim do! I guess the Rohirrim are a bit neater, for want of a better term, and they have their nice cloaks, and all of them have helmets.. a bit more organised and militaristic for want of a better phrase.

I do like those Wildmen options. Not wanting a whole lot of them, but it'd be nice to have a few in the collection for the variety.

Oh - I already have a whole bunch of foot Rohirrim - I'm just looking at these to add some more variety to the force, since the plastic Rohirrim aren't the most ...impressive. I think I have some Cav as well, but not entirely sure.

In the USA check out red box games. They make some great minis and have dwarves as well as elves. Great sculpts too. Not cheap though.

Before you purchase anything, may I strongly suggest looking at Wargames Factory. They have a large range of figures that can be substituted for lord of the rings figures. Their models are fantastic quality and are very cheap compared to GW. They also have a lot of conversion potential so each model can look unique. I have a lot of WGF models at home right now just waiting for my attention.
