Post subject:  Size of GW Dragon?

Hey all, I recently came across what I think might be some interesting proxies for use as Dragons. I just need to know how big the official GW one is. How many inches/cms high, long and how big the base is. Thanks.

To get you started, in its pose, the dragon is about 3.5" in height (going up to the wing-tip) and about 4" in length (though that is debatable, as the tail is curled). In centimeters that is about 8.5cm tall, 10cm long. Though that is not precise measuring, just a bit of rounding my measurements. Hope it helps!

Wow, that's pretty small actually. The two Dragons I was looking at were about 4" high and 5" long. They're pre-painted plastic, but look pretty nice. How big is the base/ does GW sell them separately?

Ah the base. I have no idea if GW sells them separately, as I have never looked. I do agree that the GW dragon is a bit smaller than I would have thought.

Regarding the ones which you have found, though, I would think that they'd be fine- a bit larger, perhaps, but as long as they are not obscenely so, there shouldn't be any issue- after all, not all dragons grow to the same, pre-forged size. Besides, I got the impression from the Hobbit that Smaug was quite a bit bigger than the fellow I have. But just so long as it doesn't take up too much real estate, it should be fine. Actually, I'll go measure. Give me a minute.

I have returned from measuring and have realized that I have measured wrongly! Mea culpa...

So, to give you proper measurements, the dragon is actually 4.5" in height, 5" in length, with about a 4" base in length, about 2.75-3" width. There, that seems better.

For the record, that is what happens when one uses a Leatherman to measure something when one is used to a tape measure. My apologies, Lord Hurin.

So Hurin, could you possibly post a picture or link of this/these dragons you have found? Only if possible of course.

Here they are

Bear in mind that I absolutely HATED GW's Dragon model with a fiery passion until I saw The Green Dragon's green paint job for it on this very site. These people do make a few more Dragons as well.

GW' LOTR Dragon's base is the same size as that of the Cave Darke, Great Beast and Watcher. It is a lot smaller than a Mumak and the Dragon's you are looking at.

So those will not fit on the Dragon's base at all? Funny, since I thought they were a little small...

Is the narrow width of the Dragon's base comparable to anything else? The only large models I have are the Balrog and 40K Sentinels...

If you are lucky you might squeeze its feet onto the base but it would probably be a poor fit.

The narrowest part is 3/4 inch wider than a 60mm base, so a total of 1 1/2 inch wider.

Mmm... it might fit. Alternatively, one could do some work on the base to extend it via the use of putting more terrain on it- that tends to work for some things.

So it's about 4.5" at the narrows? So what, like 6" long? Damn, it may be too big but if it is then I'm glad I never invested in GW's puny Dragon...

Is this a Dragon base, then?

Honestly, so long as you and opposition are satisfied, then I wouldn't worry about it too terribly much. I actually like the pose as well- and I imagine, with some work, that it can be made to operate just fine. And I'm not sure if one has to stick with normal basing size- one just can't go smaller, if my memory serves me well.

Yes. I don't own the dragon, but its description page says that the product is supplied with a "Large Oval Base." You could try to make one yourself with the measurements that have been supplied, or perhaps just fork up the cash and buy one direct for $4.50. Heck, you still save a lot of cash compared to buying the actual Dragon boxed set...

Actually, I've got that second dragon you've shown (and a few of its relatives) and the GW base. It does fit, it just doesn't look quite right if you're expecting everything to be GW-monopoly legit. One of the others I got actually is a little too big, but your minis don't have to be dwarfed by their bases. They just have to use bases that are game legal for the stats you're figuring on - I asked & learned such on GW's own forums years ago.
GW does (or at least did) sell the base separate. Yup, still do. I got one a while back, & am happy to say that the price on this has stayed the same even when the mini prices have skyrocketed.

I've never seen that forest dragon piece before, I really like it. Thanks for finding & showing it to us, bro.

Post subject:  Re: Size of GW Dragon?

I've just ordered the large oval base with some other stuff (Easterlings mostly. Those new Kataphrakts are sweet!) and I'll grab the Forest Dragon and see how it fits. I'll post up pics.

Oh, and fear not, GW. I'll definitely be buying Smaug, unless of course he is as small as the current Dragon model...

Yes, Smaug... We all wait in eager anticipation... Muah ha ha ha ha....

Looking forward to seeing the pics!

I do too, but I'm almost positive Smaug wil be the same size or similar, as GW's largest LotR models (including Mumakil, Fell Beasts, Dragons, Great Eagles, Balrogs, Treebeard, Great Beasts, Cave Drakes) are to a smaller scale than the infantry, cavalry and 'smaller' monsters. I know this for a fact that they're a smaller scale, as I am very particular about scale and was very annoyed that they were smaller. (Even as a very young child, I would only play with toy animals/dinosaurs/cars etc that were to the same scale)

Yes, they are smaller. Unfortunately. But it is one of those things one simply has to put up with at the present- or make one's own.
