Hey guys,

I've recently come into possession of a box of WoMT. Since I already have a ton of WoMT I thought I'd convert the new ones to Osgilliath veterans. Now my question is, does anyone on here know of a guide or some good examples to do this? I'm new to sculpting so I'm not feeling courageous just yet. :)

Thanks in advance!

Rueben

Check out Feanor's sculpting thread over on TLA for inspiration. Hes done some great looking alternative Warriors of Minas Tirith with long black surcoats replacing their chest and thigh plate armour.

I started work on a small unit of 11 several years back, but have painted just over 2/3 of them. I shall post some images when I get home. I would strongly suggest really going to town to make them stand out from the WOMT, with head swaps from corsairs of Umbar and the conversion sprue from BGIME magazine, as well as battle damaged and weather corroded armour. I would also recommend applying rubble to show that they are in the wreck of Osgiliath so that they really stand out as Veterans rather than WOMT with the odd personal touch.

Basically, just make little cuts and dents in their gear, and give them capes or bedrolls made of greenstuff. It's the simplest way I know of. Headswaps and weapon swaps also can work

Although I am no master craftsman or painter, I have made a lot of Veterans over the past few weeks. I'd be interested to see what you think.

Backstory: I created 6 companies of these guys for WOTR, so I had to make sure the ideas I used were simple and easy to do. When you're converting 48 figures you have to break it into simple steps.

1) Wear and tear

Take a thin file or something relatively sharp, and score the models with them. Look at the models and think about war. What parts would be affected by continuous fighting and disrepair? On mine, I would dramatise this by gauging shields, notching swords, and dinting armour. It's relatively simple, but quite effective for giving the regimented men of Minas Tirith some distinct character.

2) Green stuff

I'm not too crazy about green stuff - not only am I not good with it, I find it a pain to use effectively. That said, simple cloth such as little banners and scraps of bandage is quite easy to do. I find that I always use less than I make - so the rule is conservatism when it comes to greening your men.

3) Paint it up, Boss

My traditional paint job for WOMT is relatively bright - but for men who have been trapped in a ruined city, without access to a smithy or even a rag to wipe the sweat from their brow, I would imagine even the brightest of armour would begin to dim and tarnish. I was therefore very heavy handed with Games Workshop's own Nuln Oil wash - this is heavy and dark enough to dim bright silver paintwork convincingly. I also based them slightly differently to my other Gondorians, taking a piece of flint from the garden, breaking it into pieces, and using it for the rubble of Osgiliath.

The bald head with moustache is from a corsair of Umbar, and the other moustahced head is for the conversion sprue that came with the Battle games in Middle Earth magazine. They are occasionally available on eBay.

@ King Ondoher: thanks. Those were meant to be Warriors of Gondor actually, and not specifically Osgiliath Veterans. But indeed, that conversion is also a great way to make them special. If anyone needs info on how I made them, I can provide them articles of Spod, and old TLA member who back in the days had some articles where he explained the conversion.

Anyway, here's a German article on converting Osgiliath Veterans:
http://www.tabletop-hdr.de/der-graue-pi ... veteranen/
Some great ideas in there!

The work posted here looks great too, some very original conversions! :)
I've also converted some myself, years ago. Here they are:

The left one's head comes from the BGiMe Conversion Sprue (which can still be found often on ebay).

Splashes were made with a mix of water effects, GW snow powder and white paint, but I'm not overly glad with the outcome.

As you see, mostly different colour scheme and some small conversions. More elaborate conversions were planned, but never finished.

Both your veterans look great!
I wanted to convert some of them to veterans, but I don't have the time for it.

@Fëanor
I'm glad to see that you are still busy with the hobby! (we played a few games in Middelburg)

Thanks guys. :)
They are a bit beat up, indeed, but I nowadays think it's a bit exaggerated. Especially the armour looks way to rusty, I think: I looks like it could be falling apart any time! Anyway, I hope I've inspired some people.
The WoMT are actually pretty easy to convert and with some creativity, you can make them very convincing veterans. Also, it's great fun to make battle-damaged armour!

EDIT: @imrail: yes I remember you. :) And indeed, I'm very much still in the hobby! I had a sort of brake at the start of my studies, but I'm back more than ever.
