hey guys, i just wanted some advice on varnishing.
i've just been using a standard varnish i got from an art store, and i find it clouds up some of the detail and sort of 'mutes' paint that i have so painstakingly applied : (

so can you recommend any good brush on varnish brands out there? something that you have used in the past with good results?
also i have heard that gloss varnish protects more than matte varnish, so do any of you apply gloss, then matte varnish? thanks

I've heard Vajello Matte Varnish is good. There's also Lahman Medium I think.

Be sure you are following the instructions on the exactly. I like krylon matte finish. The instructions say after the first layer is on i must wait 2 minutes before applying the second coat. Once, i did not wait A FULL TWO MINUTES and the sealant clouded over.

So my first recommendation would be to follow the instructions on the can *exactly* as they are written. My second recommendation would be to find a different brand.

I use Winsor & Newton Artist Acrylic Varnish and it works well but if I were to paint it on thick or not shake the bottle properly I would suffer similar issues to you. Using gloss varnish first is supposed to provide a harder wearing finish but I have never found it to be necessary.
