So I am planning on creating my own mounted Boromir of the white tower conversion.
Am I right in assuming that in gaming terms it is far better to pay the extra points and give a mounted Boromir a lance rather than leave him with a sword? (I do not plan on making a banner version mounted)
So for my conversion I should make Boromir hold a lance instead of a sword?

Yes. You can put the sword on his back as well. Or maybe one arm holding the lance, then raising the sword/lunging forward and the shield on his back.
