For a long time I've been obsessed with Ithilien and Osgiliath, so I decided to whack together a competitive army:

500 Points

Ithilien:

Hero's
Cirion, Lieutenant of Amon Barad
Damrod, Ranger of Ithilien

Warriors
15 Warriors of Minas Tirith with Shields
15 Warriors of Minas Tirith with Shields and Spears
15 Rangers of Gondor

Grey Company:

2 Rangers of the North

500 points total, 49 units 33% bows 6 might points

750 Points

Ithilien:

Hero's
Cirion, Lieutenant of Amon Barad
Damrod, Ranger of Ithilien

Warriors
23 Warriors of Minas Tirith with Shields
23 Warriors of Minas Tirith with Shields and Spears
23 Rangers of Gondor

Grey Company:

4 Rangers of the North

750 points total, 75 units 33% bows 8 might points

What do you guys think?

It's pretty good. However, if you're taking Rangers of the North, you should probably also take the Rangers of Arnor available with them.

I didn't want to go overboard on grey company, partly because of army theme, partly because I wanted a shield wall and partly because some local players outright refuse to play grey company forces

Hmm... I'm thinking, how are you planning to field them ?

What would be the point of him bringing along Rangers of Arnor? They have the same stats as the Rangers of Gondor.

To increase the bow count I think.

You already have enough bows, and the bow count has to go across the whole army as well, doesn't it? Anyways, it wouldn't increase it at all. You would basically just trade the names for 8 or 16 rangers, depending on which list.

should be pretty basic to field.

main force lead by cirion (bout 8 spear men and 8 shields)

a ranger or 2 with another force

and have rangers based in cover to shoot out cavalry, trolls the usual and to protect my main force

Nope. Bow Count has to be per contingent. In any case though, the Grey Company doesn't follow the bow count rule but they are required to have 1 Dunedain or 1 Ranger of the North for every four Rangers of Arnor. Could easily drop 1 Ranger of the North and get 3 Rangers of Arnor for the same price.

So bow count is only per contingent, got it.

Hmm, i would NOT feel comfortable having f4 as the highest in my army. Get a better hero, at the very least upgrade Cirion into Arathorn.....

He more than makes up for that in numbers. Arathorn isn't very themed with this though. The lists look good to me.

I agree with suicidalmarsbar, a themed option for a strong hero would be the new faramir captain of Ithillien. this way you would have a strong hero plus a banner for all those f3 troops. :D

150 points is just too much to pay for a hero such as Faramir captain of Ithilien, as it compromises the numbers of the force, which is kind of what I was going for.

I would however consider trading out some rangers of the north for Faramir Captain of Gondor with heavy armour.

I drew up some plans and for a slightly better 750 point army:

Tower Of Ecthelion

Faramir, Captain of Gondor with Heavy Armour

Ithilien

Heros:

Cirion, Lieutenant of Amon Barad
Damrod, Ranger of Ithilien

Warriors

24 Warriors of Minas Tirith with Shields
24 Warriors of Minas Tirith with Shields and Spears
24 Rangers of Gondor

750 points maximum numbers maximum bows 7 might, happy days

opinions?

It's good, simple but effective. That said, it will be very vulnerable to armies with Strength 4, especially Uruk-hai. Make sure you don't get drawn into a battle of attrition with such an army, as you'll get slaughtered. I know Gondor normally can win a battle of attrition, indeed it's often the best tactic, but you won't stand a chance against anyone with Strength 4.

I reckon I would stand a chance against urakhai because or a decent amount of fire power and for once the forces of good will for once have the advantage of numbers.

That being said however the white hand will be harder to face because of their strength value

*UPDATE*

1000 point list

Tower Of Ecthelion

Boromir Captain of the White Tower with Shield
Faramir Captain of Gondor with Heavy Armour, Horse and Lance

12 Knights of Minas Tirith with Shield
6 Citadel Guards with Longbows

Ithilien

Cirion, Lieutenant of Amon Barad
Damrod Ranger of Ithilien

18 Warriors of Minas Tirith with Shield
16 Warriors of Minas Tirith with Shield and Spear
14 Rangers of Gondor
3 Rangers of Gondor with Spear

Thats 1000 Points, 13 Might Max Bows 73 in Numbers

plan is Faramir leads cavalry, allowing heroic moves to stop them being ran down ect, they take objectives quickly/flank enemy units, (note my cavalry will be used as a reserve unit and not to just charge straight at the foe like a suicidal madman)

Boromir and Cirion each lead a bunch of troops, prefferably a slightly larger group with cirion, allowing Boromir to do what he does best and take full advantage of his horn rule

Damrod leads rangers

not quite sure what i'm doing with the citidel gaurd yet, keeping them with the rangers, or advancing them slowly and eventually get them stuck into fighting hand to hand with there decent fight value

what do you guys think?

I think Madril is abetter choice than cirion, if you have to play a game with reinforcements his rule will be ridiculously good, whereas cirion's will likely not make any difference....

No matter what, have Boromir as the hero they guard. He's the hardest to kill so they'll be passing courage tests for basically the whole game. Make sure Boromir has enough units around him so he won't get surrounded. Send the citadel guards with Cirion, with his special rule they'll be your terror killers, just make sure they have enough back-up just in case.

My Suggestion with your latest list is to drop Faramir with his heavy armor and have him lead his rangers. From my experience in playing a Rangers army, this is the best way to go due to he him being a good all around hero and that he can lend some rangers some might (Also one extra dice when shooting in groups 8) ) Plus then you can have some more extra points for adding some more troops or just giving Boromir a horse and have him lead the Knights. For the Citadel Guard I say have 3 bodyguard Cirion and another 3 Faramir so that If one dies you wont loose the courage bonus.
