Its a solid list for sure. At that points value I seldom take the KC (even though he is the best Dwarf Hero).

If you want you could swap him for a Captain and some Khazad/Iron Guards. I think that might serve you better at that point level

Iron guards are pretty fun to roll up with

I have a hard time getting rid of the KC because he is what is really drawing me to the dwarfs.

Then by all means keep him. Just keep your troops tight to take effect of those 2 banners

JamesR I am interested as to why you think the King's Champion is the best Dwarven hero. I always thought of him as a hero killer, not much else.

CTBowes I would suggest swapping the Rangers with 2-handed axes with Ranges with Throwing Axes or Bows.

I'd be reluctant to just take Balin by himself, if it were me i'd put Balin with warband 1 and then change Gimli to either a Shieldbearer or a Captain and take a few extra warriors to add to your numbers but that's just me.

He is best hero cos you get 2 banners (important for an army with no spears) and a hero who has 5 fate, d9, banner re-rolls, and 3 attacks when all 3 models are side by side.

He only gets one banner re-roll, not two (unless I am mistaken). And the moment the Heralds are engaged, he immediately loses the Defense and Fate bonus. And against the common defense 6 he isn't any better that a regular hero.

He doesn't lose the defence bonus when they become engaged, only if they back away. Never said he get's two banner re-rolls either. Even without the heralds a 3 attack hero at fight 6 is deadly.

The candy bar summed it up pretty well. Str 5, D 9 is beast. But in addition to what all Marsbar points out is the fact he pays you to play him.
What I mean by that is not too long ago I went through the Free Peoples source book and calculated each hero's base cost and cost per stat point to decide who gives you the most bang for your buck. The KC's in the negative, meaning after subtracting points for the banners, gear and special rules he comes out to something like -15 points for his stat line.

Aye, the champion is ridiculously underpriced, a quick comparison to taking gimli and a dwarf warrior with banner should make that very clear. He was too cheap when costing 135 points (original WD release), and for some reason they thought he needed to get even less expensive later on. Whenever you plan to take a banner (and with dwarves, I wouldn't leave home without one), let alone two, you are probably better off taking the King's Champion.

Main objection to the given list is that it contains a seperate hero, would personally prefer either all heroes with a decent group of warriors, or dropping the seperate hero and using the spare points to upgrade the members of the remaining warbands. Depends on the scenario though, for several it often hardly matters who is in what warband.

I think that it lacks numbers; perhaps drop Balin for a captain and a few more troops? You already have the KC and Gimli, which is basically all the power you need at 500 points in terms of heroes.

I don't think dropping Balin would give you many more troops. You could get a captain and like 1 extra troop for the same points. I'd rather Balin personally.

OR

You could take Hobbit era balin and some erebor dwarves with spears. That would increase your numbers as that Balin is dirt cheap.

I'd swap Balin into Gimli's warband. Drop Gimli and take a more powerful hero like dwalin or legolas

Legolaa leading dwarves? lol
Also I dotn think dwalin is better, in fact I think its rather worst

Only defensively. Dwalin gets both of Gimli's attack options (the +1 to wound and 3 attacks) and +1 strength. Personally I much prefer Dwalin

Also in the roll he is playing.

Balin is useless on his own. 2 attacks is not going to save him from much if maelstrom of battle throws him across the board. But Dwalin (maybe on a pony) would hurt people. They would have to divert more resources.
Balin is a troop leader, 2 attacks and 3 might is not going to kill as much gilmi or Dwalin.

Gimli is just many points for a solid 3 attack hero with high defence. But many points

Post subject:  Re: 500 pts Durins Folk

How is Gimli "many" points for a three attack hero? He's the cheapest three attack hero available to the good side as far as I'm aware, aside from certain members of Thorin's Company possibly (and they can't lead troops). Also as many have pointed out with Durins axe Balin is a three attack hero to win fights. As for using Legolas, that would crucify the theme completely.

Dwalin is great, but he suffers from terrible defense. from 8 to 6 is a massive downgrade and is felt when you lose fights. Gimli is tough to take down, but Dwalin can easily pick up wounds from ordinary soldier, esp. uruk-hai and the like. Besides, as far as I'm aware, that would require this guy to buy a box of hobbit dwarves, dwalin and if he wants him on pony convert him on pony. I think we should try to remain in the actual Durin's Folk army list. But it's CTBowes call...

I would go for gimli noneless for a few things:
- higher defence in which if you lose combat defence 6 is almost a joke to heroe stat level ( easier to wound vs S4)
- 1+ might
- have throwing axes(not much but still a shooting attackk)
- also he get the upgrade of cloaks and having a really hard to kill dwarf coming towards you which you cannot shoot against at, unless a minimum distance its pain :P
