I just saw DoS again yesterday and now I'm totally into the Hunter Orcs. I already had a box each mounted and on foot and I'm going to get some more asap. I thought I'd throw together a list (my first in quite a long time) as a goal for collecting.

500 points
Fimbul's Hunters - 210pts
Fimbul on Fell Warg
6 Hunter Orcs on Fell Wargs
6 Hunter Orcs with Orc bows

Yamarz's Lads - 145pts
Yamarz, Hunter Orc Captain
8 Hunter Orcs
4 Hunter Orcs with 2-handed weapon

Larghash's Scouts - 145pts
Larghash, Hunter Orc Captain
8 Hunter Orcs
4 Hunter Orcs with 2-handed weapon

39 models, 7 Might. 500 points exactly.

750 points
Bolg's Berzerkers - 279pts
Bolg
4 Hunter Orcs
8 Hunter Orcs with 2-handed weapon

Fimbul's Hunters - 180pts
Fimbul on Fell Warg
6 Hunter Orcs on Fell Wargs
3 Hunter Orcs

Yamarz's Lads - 145pts
Yamarz, Hunter Orc Captain
8 Hunter Orcs
4 Hunter Orcs with 2-handed weapon

Larghash's Scouts - 147pts
Larghash, Hunter Orc Captain
6 Hunter Orcs
6 Hunter Orcs with Orc bows

49 models, 10 Might. 751 points total.

Looks cool fluffy and scary enough but low defense and lack of varying troops will kill this army in serious competition. If you're playing for fun though should be a blast.

Don't underestimate the hunter orcs. I recently came 5th with my hunter orc army at a GBHL event. I would probably ally in a shaman and some orc spears for added survive ability.

That might be good advice. I've been considering saving Bolg for 1000 point games anyway, so maybe I'll swap some stuff around.

Warband 1
Fimbul w/ Fell Warg - General
2 Hunter Orcs w/ Fell Wargs
10 Hunter Orcs

Warband 2
Narzug w/ Fell Warg
2 Hunter Orcs w/ Fell Wargs
10 Hunter Orcs: 8 w/ Orc Bows

Warband 3
Mordor Orc Shaman
12 Morannon Orcs: 6 w/ shield, 6 w/ spear

That was my list and it only lost to an all hero dwarf army and an isengard army. I was very impressed with the performance.

How many people were in the tourney and how did it lose to the All hero army? Did they just keep winning combats and pick their fights well?

22 people. It was an all hero army consisting of Thorin, Dwalin, Tauriel, Gloin, Dori, Bombur & Alfred. Lots of F6, 3Att models which combined with playing on goblin town, made it very hard to swarm. When all the heroes have extra might, even if they roll a 4 they can boost it up to a 6.

All my thoughts etc can be found here http://one-ring.co.uk/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=27931 wood elves won, hobbits second, harad third.

Their biggest weakness is the F3 and the low defence. Go down quickly if you're not careful.

One of the good things about a Hunter Orc army is if you have a Warband full if 12 archers, your opponent may well assume that they will be easy to take out in combat, even if you have melee Hunter Orcs already in the fray, and you can surprise them.

Thanks for the help everyone! I'm painting up my first batch now. I'm going more dark grey and green for the flesh on them rather than the pink and orangey-brown that GW used. I couldn't really get a good look at them in the films and the "making of" book I've got largely skips over them. I think Fimbul is a mottled green and brown, so I figure I'll use him as a base and work from there.

They official studio models almost made me give up on the Hunter Orcs. I got them for Christmas 2012 and they've been sitting on sprues until yesterday. I got Fimbul because the Bridge Direct action figure impressed me and I got Bolg because I loved the character design. Never had any plans for their followers until I re-watched DoS and realized that the Orc colours were pretty similar to the first trilogy.

Personally I dislike "Power Player" armies and prefer purist armies from one list, or themed armies from events in the books or films. I suppose the hero army's characters are all together in Lake Town during the film, and its a clever use of combined special rules. I do however feel that Alfred is ridiculously under priced for such a ridiculously low points cost (which I have not mentioned!) and frankly skews the game at the moment. I suspect that tournaments are going to be blighted with his over represented presence and that G.W. will never get round to refining his rules.

I actually dont think alfrid is THAT good. He is 3 might usually, and such 15 points.
Then once that is done he is not worth 5pts himself except for his fate point

When hi is combined with Bombur (which I have never seen him fielded separately from) he gets a will point back on a 4+, which means that he is able to generate a shed load of might (with an occasional upset on a 6, which is alterable via his own might store!) I have seen him give Tree Beard 6 points of might in four turns, as well as giving Durin 3 in one turen, removing his 2 remaining the next, and then giving him 3 later on!

Its not just his stats, but the effects of his incredibly potent special rule upon others!

At the last UK tournament there were 3 Alfrids, only one had bombur.

At low points and in missions including a maelstrom of battle set up... Alfrid and Bombur die alone and cold 50% of the time.

The all hero army in question was certainly not power gaming and neither was the player. The fact it finished 12th/22 shows it. Alfred is only broken when stuck behind 40 D7 erebor dwarves and you cant get to him while he is eating bombur's will restoring pies...

and regards your experience against him bilbo, that was one time at EG v muppetslayer (louis) and he is renowned for taking the cheesiest beardiest lists possible. I have faced Alfred 4 times in the last week and killed him 3 times without him doing too much.

Aaannyway..back to hunter orcs. Magic is defo the thing to ally in. We've mentioned fury but I think something like a barrow-wight, budget wraith, spectres could work really well in a low points game.
