As some of you may know I am a strong advocate of taking nicely themed forces rather than a more Win at all costs style of list building.

I am considering either a fords of the Isen or Pelanor fields rohan force. At both battles, there is a Hero of Rohan from the books named Elfhelm.

My question is: Would it be power gaming if I used the profile of Eorl the young (with an appropriate conversion) to represent him?
Should I stick to a basic captain instead?

What do people think?

Use a generic captain profile with an extra might and courage. Tadaa!

Well the fact that you have the knowledge of lore and that he is from the straight up Rohan list shows that you aren't power gaming to me.

As long as he wasn't a hero to the level of gambling or hama I think most should be OK with it. Also honestly I would never be mad to see eorl the knight of p and theoden in the same army.

Honestly Rohans a small list and you do not have much to choose from. If you want beast heroes you realistically have only 2 guys. So I say 100% go for it.

I'd say it's not cheese. Rohan's heroes are sorry enough without restricting them by timeline. Go for it

Sounds like great idea.

I wouldn't use the Eorl the Young profile though.
You should start from a generic captain and add some more might and such.

I strongly disagree as that would be house rules, using Eorl's profile would not be as it is still an official GW profile, you are just a different model. Much better, much fairer anyway.

Are you wanting to use this at a tournament GC?

If you're doing it at home in fun game then yeah, go for it, do whatever, it's fun and it's themed, no problem at all.

If you were taking it to a tournament then if I were I'd just do the conversion as normal (so you're just using a converted Eorl the Young model), pay the points for Eorl the Young, use Eorl the Young's stats and then write 'Elfhelm' in brackets after the entry on your army list. That way it's game legal but before every game you can just explain your theme/fluff to your opponent. If they have a huge problem with it then call him Eorl for the game but I imagine most people will be absolutely fine with you calling him Elfhelm.

You're about the fluffiest/theme-centric player I know, the very fact that you're asking if this is cheese is a credit to how non-cheesy it is :-)

I would make the oposite of erkenbrand but gives riders of rohan extra strength for 2pts for example :P

Lol well that is a very encouraging response there.

I am thinking about using this at tourney, if I did so I would be converting a model for Elfhelm but I would take a model or Eorl anyway, this way if anyone has an issue fighting the converted proxy I have the appropriate model anyway.

If anyone has an issue with this I hope you demolish their army. From your posting you seem to be a straight up guy and if anyway seriously has a problem when regardless of the name you're paying a point cost for a profile games workshop has set, they have an issue they need to fix.

not exactly. otherwise what is to stop you just putting down 25mm bases with a name written/ painted on the table  I'd paid X points for the character but I didnt have it so I thought a base will suffice...

Friendly games is fine but tournament games need to be 'proper'.

All of this is irrelevant anyway, I spoke to GC earlier and he is getting an eorl model for tournaments.

I couldn't take seriously anyone who had an issue with making one model who he's paying for and carefully converting in an already weak list.

The example you're giving is him not buying the knight of pelennor and putting in a converted warrior opposed to buying a model and calling it a different name. Waaaayy different worlds. He literally is buying the model. Why would anyone have an issue with the bought model and a different name...

Post subject:  Re: Need some opinions on whether this counts as cheese

Just to clarify this:

My plan is to convert an Elfhelm model, probably using a royal guard as a base, but to also have a model of Eorl the young painted as Eorl just in case someone isn't happy with what is essentially a proxy.
That's all that really needs to be said on this as I don't want this to detract into the old proxy argument.

Reason for the thread is me asking whether people think it cheesy to use Eorl's profile to represent a more contemporary Hero. The consensus seems to be it wouldn't be an issue so I shall have a look at converting and using this later on :)
