Are there any pros to using the generic Dwarven kings?
I was sorting the butload of trades i did yesterday and i noticed that in the Dwarven lot i got (loads of warriors, gimli, ironbreakers, rangers) I also got one or 2 generic kings.
Are they good as leaders of a force? As it looks like a lot of people swear by the big guns.
Furthermore is the ballistae worth it? I saw i got one in the trade.
And finally since i have tons of Gimli's in many variants would some of them be good for a specific troop type? Perhaps Ironbreakers or Captains?
I'm gonna keep one Gimli 'as Gimli'. And paint him in his own paint scheme while giving the others that of the Hold.

Personally I'm not a fan of dwarf kings but they are good in lower points matches just to get those couple of extra models in. As for the ballista I've never had much success personally, but they could be a fun investment in large point matches (it's just not worth it in anything under 1000pts). Hope this helps :)

Thanks!
For now i'll stay of buying a non generic king. Finish my paintwork. I can always add in a named King if need be later on.

All seige weapons really need to have their costs reduced - they were worthwhile pre warbands as armies deployed alot further away. They used to be quite capable of getting back their points or near to.

As for the kings, its generally better to go for named heroes as they tend to do whatever job better, but kings are good for D8, extra fight and courage over the captain. If you are going for a troop heavy army they are a better choice as they cost that bit less. IMO they also need to have a slight points cost reduction or given a special stat/rule, they are mathematically the right points, but they just don't really excel in any one area.

You could always put them up in a trade list? I'm looking for the Dwarf King who is swinging his axe with 2 hands :P

I am trying to convert my mom Gimli to a kings champion. Also old Balins is the same points as a king but better.

Yeah I noticed that. It's absurd.
So i'll probably proxy him with one of my Kings.
Although those Wardens seem cool the price is too much for me so i'm not using em.
I sorted all the Dwarves i got and i noticed it's mostly Rangers, Banners, captains, Iron Guard and Gimli's + 2 Kings. So i've placed an order for 3x Warriors. And a dozen Khazad Guard.
Should unlock all that's useful troops wise bar those wardens.
I'm gonna field those 2 wandering Dwarves too i think.
I know they're suboptimal from what I rad but they just seem fun and the one with the bow seems ideal to fluff wise lead the Rangers.

That's a great haul you got there. If I'm not mistaken, I may still have an extra Balin and Dain around somewhere if you're interested.

if you want cheap heroes and still good ones

Try murin and drar and balin with durin´s axe, along with gimli (if you can fit them all) plenty might for 500pts and sitll ponits for a couple numbers...

The big disadvantage of Murin and Drar is, that they only can lead 1 warriors together.
If you want a strong army, you should play Balin instead of a drawking, if you don't have him already in your army.
Also there aren't any Banners in Erebor's lists, because the king's champion is on the field (add the points of a dwarf king and two banners and compare it with the points for the champion...).
And with the Hobbit: why playing Gimli or Balin, if you could take Thorin and some Dwarfs with spears?!
Thats how gamesworkshop does it, high price little points and the newer the better.
