Hello!

I am planning on building an Angmar army (around 500-600 points).

The models I currently have are:

- Witch king (foot, mtd, fell beast).
- Orcs (core of the army).
- Orc Shaman
- Orc Captains
- Orc Banner

Models I am planning to buy:

- 2 barrow wights
- Chieftain Buhrdur
- 1 shade
- 3 or 6 spectres. (don't know how many you need at 500/600p)

Any advice on what to get is welcome!

Hi, I have a couple of idea lists for you, both 500pts:

Version 1:

The Dwimmerlaik
6 Orc Warriors w/ shields
6 Orc Warriors w/ spears

Burhdur, Troll Chieftain
5 Orc Warriors w/ shields
5 Orc Warriors w/ spears
1 Spectre

Barrow-Wight
6 Orc Warriors w/ shields
6 Orc Warriors w/ spears

Version 2:

The Witch-king of Angmar (2/12/1)
5 Orc Warriors w/ shields
5 Orc Warriors w/ spears

Burhdur, Troll Chieftain
5 Orc Warriors w/ shields
5 Orc Warriors w/ spears

Shade
6 Orc Warriors w/ shields
6 Orc Warriors w/ spears

The spectre in the first list is just to fill out the points again. Personally I think for Angmar you need Burhdur and either the Dwimmerlaik or a Shade, if at a higher points all three. Don't bother with Orc Captains etc unless you want Mordor.

Not always a shade, spectre and barrow wight? What about a banner or shaman?

Well a lone Spectre is essentially pointless, the only reason I put it in the first list is to take up remaining photos. I wouldn't take Spectres until a higher points level. Barrow-Wights can be useful, I found it very useful at 300pts, but it depends. The Shade is almost essential, but if you want to take the Dwimmerlaik at 500pts (I also highly recommend the Dwimmerlaik, one of my favourites), there really isn't room as you need a combat hero too imo. You could swap the Barrow-Wight for a Shaman if you want, but then you'd be losing out on what makes Angmar, Angmar and not a weak Mordor - the spirits. A Banner at a larger points game in conjuction with a Shade and/or the Dwimmerlaik can make a battleline of Orcs a pretty formidable, but I wouln't at less than 600pts.

What about regular cave trolls or should you always pick up Buhrdur?

Sorry to hijack slightly, but I am also in the same situation as you MacCollac! My question is, does anybody have any experience or opinions when it comes to allying in hunter orcs with Angmar? With spear support, the infantry could have 3 attacks each, which would make up for Angmar being a little squishy.

*Edit - MacCollac, I have always found that Buhrdur is worth the extra points due to his might, will, fate, shoot value and courage. He is a model who always seems to perform consistently well by killing more than his points value in enemy models.

Buhrdur and the Shade are a must for Angmar. They are the perfect team.

Haha thought so! Would you also recommend regular cave trolls?

At 500pts, of you already have Buhrdur and a Shade, a Cave Troll is just too many points, you need the numbers. At 700pts sure, add a couple on top. But not at 500pts.

At 600 points I ran the Witch King on Fell Beast, Buhrdur, A Shade and a Barrow Wight with 2 Spectres and then fill out the remaining points with orcs. I did reasonably well with that list towards the middle of last year.

This is what I used frequently at 600pts Angmar.

4x Orc trackers on warg

Warband 2

8 Orc warriors with shield
4 Orc warriors with Two handed weapons

Warband 3
Barrow Wight
6 Orc warriors with shield
6 Orc warriors with spear

Warband 4
Shade
4 Orc warriors with shield
4 Orc warriors with spear

Another I´ve never tried was this at 600

Warband 1
The Dwimmerlaik on horse
5x Orc warriors with shield
5x Orc warriors with spear

Warband 2
Gulavhar, the Terror or Arnor
5x Orc warriors with shield
5x Orc warriors with spear
1x specter

Warband 3
Orc Shaman
5x Orc warriors with shield
5x Orc warriors with spear
1x specter

If you want fun and mocking with you´re oponent.

I would definitely recommend Dwimmerlake over Witch king in general. But because you own already witch king, budget witch king will do the job. 2 might, 10 will, 1 fate or similar. If you want a shade, i would recommend replacing witch king with shade. 2 big support heroes seems overkill for 600 points. Shade might be more useful in general, but its range is quite limited which is important to take into account. Enemy who spreads forces enough can make shade much less useful.

Gulavhar is cool, but unstable and pricy. A couple arrows and attacks are halved... It seems quite riscy.

Buhrdur is really good, and of course can lead a warband.

Barrowwights are visually one of the most appealing units in Lotr... But... They are useful only against a bigger hero or very elite enemy units. It might be still cheap enough to be used on side with Shade/WK.

Spectres are a bit gimmicky most of time... If i was you I wouldn't bother.

I also want to remind that orc warriors have relatively low abilities. So you are going to need a lot of orcs!
