Theodred’s Guard 600/600pts

Warband 1 – 225pts
Theodred w/ horse, shield, and throwing spear
Rohan Royal Guard w/ horse and banner
5 Rohan Royal Guard w/ horse and throwing spear

Warband 2 – 172pts
Grimbold
8 Helmingas w/ shield and throwing spear
4 Helmingas w/ shield

Warband 3 – 203pts
Captain of Rohan w/ shield and horse
3 Riders of Rohan
Rider of Rohan w/ throwing spear
Rohan Outrider w/ horse
6 Rohan Royal Guard w/ throwing spear

Leader: Theodred, Model Count: 32, Breaks after: 17 casualties, Quartered at: 8 remaining, Bows: 5, Throwing spears: 20, Heroes: 3, Might: 8

I am thinking about putting together a Theodred's Guard list as a 2020 project. I already have a good many of these models and wanted to see if I could make something fun. What do you guys think about the warband composition and choice of heroes?

I took the captain over Elfhelm to get another fight 5 hero to help Theodred but I didn't want to spend to much on him either. I could swap to Elfhelm on foot for help with the infantry and turn the rider in warband three into either Theodred's guys or makes them all outriders that won't stick near the fighting. Possibly both. Advice welcome!

I haven't played Rohan myself, but I know people say that Gamling's banner giving out extra might points can be very powerful. Do you think that would only be useful at a higher points level, or an all-hero army?

I think Gamling's banner is pretty useful generally if you have the points for it. I have seen people squeeze it in at 500pts but I think 600pts and up is better for it. Having a banner is always nice for cav and the added might for moves and combats are great. Unfortunately for my list, however, the Gamling is not part of the Theodred's Guard legion roster. I can't take him without loosing the bonuses and theme. I had been planning to use Gamling's model as the Royal Guard with banner anyhow since I have it to hand.

Ah, I hadn't realized that was a legendary legion (I can't remember all the names yet!). I can understand why you left him out then.

I think the new legion with the siege uruk-hai looks interesting. If you put an engineer captain on a siege ballista now with re-rolls you ought to have a good chance of taking out a hero or two between the re-rolls and the might.

I don't have the book to hand but I think that Elfhelm may be a good choice due to his shooting buff perhaps for all of your throwing spears ?

I thought about Elfhelm some to add more might to the infantry but he doesn't have any area buffs for models with throwing spears just himself. If I brought him it would be for making heroics so Grimbold can save his might for winning fights. Do you think Elfhelm is just better than the Captain Mr. Gimli?

Alex123, I have seen the Isengard Legion in action and it makes those siege weapons pretty nasty for sure.

I thought he had an area buff for some reason. In any case now that I have the book in front of me, Elfhelm does has heroic accuracy which may be handy. If you declare 'Take Aim' then he and friendly models in 6" may re-roll in the way rolls for that shoot phase. Situational but not bad I think.

Elfhelm also has heroic defence which is great at tying up combat threats that may be going after Theodred.

Granted these are at the expense of heroic march which the Rohan captain has, but with your cavalry element you aren't lacking on mobility.
