Hi all, I have recently taken up this hobby and have just finished painting my 4th piece. The piece is a Mordor Troll and I would welcome any feedback - but please go easy I have only just started learning various painting techniques. Regards, Grima |

Very nice indeed! My first paint jobs...I'd never post them  You might want a bit of highlight on the base: use a very light drybrush of lighter brown (like commando khaki) if it's supposed to be earth, or grey if it's supposed to be gravel. If you haven't drybrushed before, play with it on something else, like a bit of sprue. It's easy to get too much ...

I say well done for a beginner. You're only going to improve and get much better over time model after model. Usually you'll tend to see flaws in your old piece and look to do better in the next one and experiment with new techniques. Just make sure that if you're experimenting, do what whafrog said and test try it on something not valuable. Also as a painter it depends on how much detail you want to go into and how fast you want the model done to move onto the next or have it playable for a game. Usually gamers want their models done quickly and over with, while hardcore hobbyist are perfectionists. If there's any constructive critism I can give you when you start your next project, you should look to try a smoother color transition. For example the skin of your troll is a tanned flesh color while his hard rocky hide is brown and it pops right out like a borderline. What I would suggest is transition the brown over the skin where his rocky hide meets the leathery skin. To do that you can dilute the brown paint with water and do a light wash around the border and/or drybrush the color around the border. Also you can mix the tan skin color you used with the brown to make its own color and that should make the transition look seemless. Anyway I'm not the most professional painter around here so I'm sure there are others that can give you better info and details on how to improve. |

Thanks for all the feedback and most importantly for all the advice you have given me. It was a great confidence boost to receive some great comments and some important pointers. I am currently working on my next piece which I will upload when completed. Thanks again

Great painting Grima, especially for a beginner. The eyes are brilliant, whenever I tried to paint eyes when I was just starting it'd look nowhere near as good as that. I'd agree with adding some drybrushing to the base though. I usually drybrush mine with bleached bone, that seems to give quite an effective look. Great job on him! Certainly better than anything I did when I started out. Maybe a dry brush on the canvas on the drum, this'll show it been worn and hit. Drum
