Post subject:  What army?

Hello 'The One Ring' members.

I'm thinking of starting LotR, I already play Bretonnians in WHFB and Imperial Guard in WH40K (and after two 1/2 years of waiting, soon to be a Grey Knight player, every month I wastld, they'll be out in a month or so :P).

After thinking about which army to collect for a while I still can't decide as I don't know about the different armies in much depth.

I'm looking for an army that you need to think with to assure victory, not an automatic (why like Bretonnians, Grey Knights and, to some extent, Imperial Guard). I want an army that you need to employ tactics to to mae sure they function well, not like for example a WHFB Dwarf Gunline. I also like using human armies (preferably good guys) if the two can join in LotRSBG.

To sum up, needs to have heavy tactics, good guys and/or humans would be a bonus. Any ideas?

Depend on what system your going to play: SBG or WoTR?
In case you don't know the diffirence:

SBG: Skirmish batttles

WoTR: Huge Battles

Each system has different rules.

I don' WoTR so I can't help you in that.

Welcome to the OR!

Arnor sounds like a good bet for you. They are definitely a finesse army rather than point, roll, win.

I would suggest Wood Elves. They're really fragile, and definitely can't win in straight on combat, so you need to make clever use of terrain to win.
Plus, they're good guys and they look cool :)

Rohan for SBG. They are pretty average troops with some good heroes but you need a heck of a lot of experience and cool headed to play them.

There is also the OOP game known as LotR Tradeable Miniatures Game,BUT to get into you'll need some dough because its a collectors thing now(somewhat) but I LOVE the rule system and that its on a hex map,but you won't find many of us on this site(let me know if you want some more info.)There,I think people have voiced for every legit version of LotR minis

Good Human Armies pretty much limits you to Gondor, Arnor, Rohan and affiliates. Of these I would say Arnor or Gondor are fun to play and not always a simple win. I would go for Gondor as you get more variety that way than playing Arnor which has limited troop types, but really jsut go with which minis you like better. If you like the Arnor minis, then go for tat, get yourself some hobbits and rangers and you are set. If Gondor then have a look as there is a lot of variety.

EDIT: I left out Rohan because I dont really like any of the minis but if you like them you can go for them as well.

The most tactical armies are cavalry armies (a.k.a. Rohan). You really need tactics for all cavalry armies, because their greatest asset, their mobility, requires lots of skill to use properly. Besides their mobility, cavalry have few other advantages over infantry, thus the only way you can win is by taking full advantage of their mobility. Rohan also fit your requirements for being both good and human. The main problem is that Rohan haven't had any updated stats for years, so most of their units are slightly over-priced.

Corsairs are also good, but hard to use. I find them fun myself and they need a lot of tactical thinking. They could be another option.
