Post subject:  Started LOTR again. Have som questions.

Hello everyone! I wasn't sure where to post this, but i didn't want to make many threads so i posted all here.

I quit LOTR SBG many years ago, but me and my friends decided to pick it up again. We've played some rounds already, and now I have som questions.

First of all: I only have the old rulebooks which came with the "starter sets" for The Fellowship of The Ring, The Two Towers and The Return of The King. I haven't got any of these: http://www.games-workshop.com/gws/catalog/armySubUnitCats.jsp?catId=cat750005a&rootCatGameStyle=

Are the rules very different from the old books I have. Do i need the the main rulebook? Or is it enough to buy the new sourcebooks to get my rules up to date?

Another question I have is regarding the sorcerous blast spell. What happens if my Gandalf uses a sorcerous blast on a goblin in the front of a tight formation? How can those behind him get blasted to the side when there's units standing in the way on all sides?

And lastly. When you shoot with for example legolas, you can roll two dice (x3). But if I roll 1 and 6 when figuring out the hit, can I then roll one or two dice on the wound roll?

Thank you for taking the time to read my questions.
Friendly regards,
Ozmo

For the first one, the rulebook hasn't changed as far as I know, but the new army books are a must(at leastthe one of your army)

For the shooting:
You don't roll two dice. Each model rolls one die to hit (only certain models, like Legolas and Haldir, can fire multiple times in a single turn). If the die roll is equal to or higher than the model's shooting value (4+ for most Men, 5+ for Orcs, 3+ for most Elves and so on), you have scored a hit and may now roll on the to wound chart. So if an Elf Warrior with a bow rolls 3 or more to hit, he now rolls on the wound chart. Legolas has a special rule, so he can either fire 3 ordinary shots or fire once, hitting automatic.

Hope it was to any help :)

I will be getting a sourcebook instead of the main rulebook then.

Yes, we've done normal shooting the way you explain. But Legolas' 2 attack-stat only matters when working out close combat then? It doesn't apply to shooting? You only have one die when working out the hit and wound, no matter how high the attack stat of that character is?

Thank you for the replies! :)

So for legolas you roll three dice. Any that are 3 or over you roll again. Any that are high enough to wound your target do so. Laugh evily. Rinse and repeat.

Yes, attacks on the profile only count in close combat, special rules like expert shot count for multiple shooting attacks, so the special rule tells how many arrows you can shhot

Thank you for clearing that up! Legolas won't be so overpowered next time. :D

I'm still curious about the sorcerous blast thing.

Different enough in subtle ways, so I've heard. Maybe somebody can summarize the differences. If you are thinking of building a goblin army, the Mines of Moria is a better bet since the rules booklet that come with that box set is identical to the big blue One Ring book, just in a smaller format.

The new sourcebooks only have army configuration rules and updated profiles.

Not sure what you mean by "units standing in the way". Any units touched by the base of the targeted model as it is pushed back are knocked down.

But what if the units which are in base contact with the target are obstructed by more units again? This would happen in a tight formation with many guys next to each other. The units behind the guy in the front row won't have any space on their sides because of more units. How can they be knocked to the side?

I also have another question. I see that you often refer to "LoME" and "warband" rules? As far as i have understood the warband rules is the new rules in the new sourcebooks. Do i use LoME rules when i use my old ROTK starter set book?

Ah, I see, the rule says they should be "moved aside". However, I think they're just knocked down, taking up the same base location they did when standing. Or at least, that would be my house rule, because they don't say how far the model should be "moved aside".

It's a good idea to use LoME if you don't want to use the war band rules. Makes things more balanced and thematic, on the whole. I didn't think I would like the war band rules as much as LoME, but I was wrong, I like them more.

Thank you very much for taking time to answer my question. We will do sorcerous blast that way then! :)

I have this rulebook: http://i.ebayimg.com/t/Lord-Rings-Retur ... ~60_35.JPG

Would it serve any purpose to buy this one? http://www.games-workshop.com/gws/catal ... rod1140214

I think there are some changes. We'll have to wait for someone like hithero to chime in because he knows the history.
