Post subject:  Journeybooks?

Hello all,

Someone might remember me, i started a thread thinking of getting into this, and after much good advice i just ordered a "The hobbit: Escape from goblin town" starter set :) so i'm really looking forward to starting.

I am guessing the set has everything i need, but i noticed that the rulebook is a lot shorter than the one you can buy separately? will this mean i will eventually have to buy the "bigger" rulebook??

I've heard talk about these "journey books"? what are they exactly?

also, i was wondering if i can use LOTR models, like "Watcher in the water" and the Balrog along my Hobbit miniatures in games? i really like the watcher :P

you dont have to get the big rulebook - the only difference between the starter one and that is the showcase stuff. And the bigger one may have more pictures.

As far as I'm aware all models will be compatible and I'm planning on mixing the models in my armies.

Journey books are supplements based on the 3 LotR films so FotR, TTT and RotK. They are a little outdated rulewise but they are probably some of the best for hobbists as they contain loads of terrain articles. I wouldn't get them as a priority but if they come up cheap on ebay etc then they are good.

I like the watcher but am reluctant to get one due to it being finecast.

Finecast? It is GW's new material that they are starting to cast models in and charging OTT prices for it. They claim it is more finely detailed than the metal counterparts but there have been massive problems with it. I would say 60-70% of most FC models I have seen have been miscast. This may be bubbles on the model, or missing fingers or even part of the model not being there. (I had a ringwraith missing a sword).

Here is a topic detailing pretty much every problem with finecast and reviews from a lot of users here

Admittedly, it is starting to get better but I am still wary about buying it. If i'm paying a premium price, I want a premium model. Always Always open a FC model instore. That way, if parts are miscast, you can ask the staff to swap either the whole set or the individual parts from another box.

Thats just a hate message from a wounded player, Finecast is awesome.

I have brought all of mine online and the only one that was wrong GW replaced in the post.

I remember buying plastics and getting miscasts, unfortunately it happens.

At the end of the day its your army so your pick of which kinds of models to build it out of. There are positives and negatives to finecast for one thing you can convert (change parts of the model to create unique poses or swap weapons or even heads) them a lot easier as you can cut through resin more easily than metal.
However, it is undeniable that you will pay top price for finecast models and the advice to open them in store is sound because they have (at least initially) been notorious for miscasts. They are expensive especially when compared to the metal models that they are replacing. Again its your army so its your choice of how much your willing to spend on it

I have many finecast products, I was just stating the known issues with it. I never had a miscast plastic in 10 years of collecting and only 1 miscast metal. In 1 year of finecast 90% has been miscast. All replaced and good now though.

On topic: if you want a watcher, go for it mate, it can be devastating when it appears out of nowhere in the middle of your opponents troops.

The box set you are buying is all plastic so you will not have any issues with miscasting. The mini rule book on the other hand is another matter. You can read more in this thread. http://www.one-ring.co.uk/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=24330&start=20
