Post subject:  Starting a Moria army

Hallo OneRingers,

I am not a beginner but I believe this is the appropriate forum for my question. For the past years I have exclusively been playing Dwarves, but I always wanted to have a Moria force. I bought the following models which constitute a 300 point army:

Warband 1:
Durburz
5 Goblin Warriors w/ shields
6 Goblin Warriors w/ spears
Cave Troll w/ spear

Warband 2:
Moria Goblin Captain w/ shield
3 Goblin Warriors w/ shields
2 Goblin Warriors w/ spears
7 Goblin Warriors w/ orc bows

Mind you, I have no other models. My birthday is upcoming and I am planning to expand this force to a 500 (or 600) points army. My questions is the following:

What would you recommend I should add to this existing force to make it a competitive and entertaining 500-600 points army to play with (my main opponents will be Dwarves and Rohan)?

I want to keep the cost of the purchases to a minimum, so the price of the models is additional factor to be considered.

Thank you for your time

Moria Shaman instead of the captain?

I agree with the marsbar, you have enough might from Durburz, what you need now is Fury. You convert your Cptn if you don't want to buy, or just prox if allowed.

Depend on the pts, swap the troll's spear for a chain or nought at all.

If you eant to expand, first starting getting more Goblins, plus cheap heroes to lead them, also if your going at least 600pts, a drum, preferably the blackshield one. A second troll and/or a dweller wouldn't go amiss either. But make sre you have more Goblins.

You should add some drums as well :)

Thank you for your reply Marsbar. To be completely honest the Goblin captain is a regular goblin proxied as a captain. I feel a bit reluctant to proxy a warrior into a shaman.

I am thinking of buying the Gundabad Command and proxying its shaman as a Moria one. Then purchasing 24 more goblins.

Therefore we have:

Warband 1: 225 points
Durburz
5 Moria Goblins w/ Shields
6 Moria Goblins w/ Spears
Cave Troll

Warband 2: 105 points
Moria Goblin Shaman (the Gundabad proxying as one)
5 Moria Goblins w/ Shields
4 Moria Goblins w/ Spears
3 Moria Goblins w/ Bows

Warband 3: 105 points
Gundabad Goblin Captain
6 Moria Goblins w/ Shields
6 Moria Goblins w/ Spears

Warband 4: 200 points
Moria Goblin Captain w/ Orc Bow (goblin warrior proxying as one)
10 Moria Goblins w/ Orc Bows
1 Gundabad Blackshield Drum

Total: 635 points, 52 models ( 14 bowmen, 8 Might)

I don't think I need to max out on the bowmen, Goblin's poor shooting combined with archery's nerf (and considering my main opponents will be Dwarves) makes it inconsequential. I assume one Shaman coupled with the Drum and Durburz should suffice in holding the army together. My concern is that the model count is a bit low for a horde army.

Thanks for your advice ElfLover.

Any additional feedback is more than welcomed.

Get rid of the bows entirely. They are nothing more than pea shooters. I'd replace them with either more standard goblins, prowlers or blackshields. IF you're playing dwarves, you are gonna need either the str 4 of the gundabads or the 2H wep bonus of the prowlers.

Hmm, the Blackshields would be better but they are also more expensive ($$-wise). Would two prowlers pair warband suffice?

probably yeah. Also remember the prowlers get better bonuses if the model they are fighting is trapped. And they can also use the piercing strike special rule as they have axes.

Post subject:  Re: Starting a Moria army

This is the only bonus (not counting the two-handed axes option). Wow Piercing Strike with +2 to wound. This is insane.

aye, potentially str 6 aswell. Just keep em safe until required as they are squishy and likely to be targeted early on.

When playing Moria either max bows or drop them, prowlers with bows though if you'd rather not.

Keep the regular gobbos, you need the numbers.

If you want, you can swap Durburz for Groblog if you want to save your Shaman's might point, but there's no need to.

Won't the backstabbers rule go to waste if I use the prowlers as archers? I don't know if +1 shoot value can compensate. I'll probably follow the latter part of your advice and just drop the bowmen completely and buy: 2 packs of prowlers, 1 Gundabad command and 24 Gobbos.
I wish I wouldn't need the prowlers though, this army's cost is escalating way too fast for my resources...

Thanks again for your advice.

every army does that, just the way it is. You want the good stuff? you have to pay for it. Hence why it is all metal/ finecast.

Anyone think the Balrog is worth playing yet? At 750 points with 3 warbands of Goblins with shamans calling Fury? Do you think that would be any good?

Post subject:  Re: Starting a Moria army

With the new rules for monsters the Balrog will probably be much more useful. Although I would feel hesitant about including him in an 750 army. You can instead add a number of Cave Trolls, or Watchers and a Cave Drake.
Don't take my word for it though, I am just starting my Moria amry :) .

No, not worth it. Especially now with heroes being able to call heroic strikes to potentially match his FV. His lack of might and fate still hurts him bad.

Moria Goblins show up on eBay in myriads. I am constantly on the look for Gundabad command. Alas, I have no hopes. It seems that I will have to make my second direct purchase from GW since I started playing the hobby!

Would you stick with normal goblins? Or is it worth collecting some Prowlers and Gundabad Blackshields? I like the look of those pieces but are costly to collect. In 500 or 750 point games how many if any, Prowlers and Blackshields would you play?

Post subject:  Re: Starting a Moria army

Judging by how under powered and unpopular men are, i'd go for the blackshields, if any. I've been fielding nothing but regular gobbo's in terms of standard infantry for years with no problem and plenty of wins. If you want elites i'd go for giant spiders and wild wargs.
