Hey, all.

I'm thinking of making a Fornost-era Angmar army to compliment my oft-delayed Arnorians, but looking through the Angmar and Mordor books, I'm really not seeing a benefit to the former. Mordor can take everything Angmar can, and quite a lot it can't.

So is there any reason I shouldn't just play Mordor and just theme it to Angmar?

with angmar you get access to barrow-wights, shades, spectres and Burdhur the hill troll. all of which are very good when used together.

Yes. Prc Captains can only lead Cave Trolls in an Angmar list. Mordor Trolls aren't as competitive as Cave Trolls.

Also, there are Shades and Burdhur. Great ones.

You do have Spectres in Mordor too though. All of the warriors except the trolls are in mordor.

Aaah the wonderfull combination of shades and spectres is lethal.(better than anything mordor has in my oppinion, not counting trolls and heroes)
As both SoutherDunedain and Gothmog said Budhur is very usefull, try to include at least 1 named wraith and the witch king as they can make up for the hitting power.

The wild wargs aren't in Mordor, are they? I don't have my book on me, but I'm pretty sure they're in Angmar but not in Mordor. They aren't particularily good or anything, but they are cheap and move very quickly.

Hmm...seems I didn't get as good a look at Mordor as I thought I did. Sorry, mates. I completely missed that Mordor didn't get Shades. I'm pretty new to the game(haven't had any chances to play), but that was still kind of presumptuous.

I was just torn, because Angmar is right up my alley; I love the Witch-King, I love the saga of the Necromancer, I love the whole war with Arnor, and the idea of him shackling the dead to his beck and call. But at the same time, I didn't know if Mordor was considered "better". Not to mention I'm not terribly fond of the Cave Troll sculpts.

Thanks for all the advice guys! And if any of you know where I can do some more reading up on Angmar's strengths and weaknesses, I'd really appreciate it!

They aren't in Angmar any more either, they were replaced with Warg Riders and mounted Orc Trackers.

Wild wargs come under Moria now along with the giant spiders and bat swarms.

Wild Wargs used to be in Dwellers, Angmar and Dol Guldor.

Bats in Moria & Dol Guldor, Spiders in Dwellers & Dol Guldor, and Cave Trolls in Moria, Dweller & Angmar. Spectres in Minas Morgul & Angmar.

Most things in the Angamr list can be found in other lists (see below) but that doesn't mean you shouldn't field Angmar to have certain heroes leading certian units and minimalisisng pts spent on things you don't want. And because there are some unique ones.

The Witch-king - Mordor, Angmar
The Dwimmerlaik - Mordor, Angmar
The Tainted - Mordor, Angmar
Gulavhar - Angmar
Buhrdur - Angmar
Shade - Angamr
Barrow-Wight - Angmar
Orc Captains - Mordor, Isengard, Angmar
Orc Shamans - Mordor, Angmar
Orc Warriors - Mordor, Isengard, Angmar
Warg Riders - Mordor, Isenagrd, Angmar
Orc Trackers - Mordor, Angmar
Spectres - Mordor, Angmar
Cave Trolls - Moria, Angmar

If you want a warg rider warband, either have the W-K lead them or use Isengard instaed because for 5pts more than a Captain you can have Sharku.

Well, thematically I wanted to do more like an "Army of the Damned". Heavy use of Spectres, Wights, Shades. I definitely want the Witch-King to lead whenever possible, too. Sounds like Angmar is more my alley, and I can ally whatever I feel the list doesn't have

I love Angmar... and if you build a Mordor army it kinda fits with most evil armies (just remember that some of these armies are for WotR and some are older LoME) still you'll get a feeling for mordor!:

You can always just ally in certain things from Mordor which you like. For my own Angmar army when I eventually get round to finishing it, I'd like to ally in some Black Guard of Barad Dur, to represent a sort of Elite band of Orcs guarding Carnn Dum.
