Hi

After contemplating over the last few years to get into the hobbit/lotr sbg, i have finally decided to take the jump and invest my money into the hobby. However, i have a few questions -

1)Is the escape from goblin town set any good for getting to grips with the rules? Also is the rule book in the set worth it or is it recommended going out and buying the £50 hardback book?

2)What would be the best army to collect for a person new to the game after purchasing escape from goblin town?

Your help would be greatly appreciated! :-D

The escape from goblin town box is great for for getting to grips with the game! The mini rule book is enough to get to know the game. The hardback isn't really worth it unless you want the profiles for the other hobbit minis not in the boxset.

For the armies, take a look at what ones you like. Have a read about them, see if any catch your attention. Are you fond of evil of good minis? Do you like orcs or men? Hobbits or elves, or maybe even goblins or spirits of Angmar? It's totally up to you which army you get. Every army has its strengths and weaknesses. Take a look at what paint schemes you like, or see if you could think of your own.

Thanks Bofur the Dwarf for the reply. It was much appreciated. I will go out and pick up the escape from goblin town set when time becomes available. Following on from your comments about armies, i decided to go and take a look at the different models and armies available and i took a liking to mordor and both types of elves, eregion/rivendell and mirkwood/lotherien. However, which one would you recommend leaning towards after escape from goblin town in terms of which one would be easier to field?

Just remember, if you want to use any of the new range, you'll need to get the big £50 rulebook. The points values and profiles of the models in EfGT can be found at this address: http://www.games-workshop.com/MEDIA_Cus ... values.pdf
Escape from Goblin Town is a very good first purchase, coming with what is effectively a full army, as well as the entire Thorin and Company: who are essential if you want to recreate battles from the Hobbit.
I'd advise waiting a week or two before fully deciding which army to go for, there's likely to be a fair few releases with Desolation of Smaug.

It's worth pointing out that whatever comes out in December may have the current Hobbit profiles in it. It's almost certainly going to have anything that crops up in TDoS. So it may be possible to get by with the small rulebook from Escape from Goblin Town and whatever comes out in December - but we can't say for sure.

Certainly I'd advise against buying the £50 rulebook right now, because it'd be horrible for you to buy it (for the profiles that they, like idiots, left out of the small rulebook) and then find out that you needn't have spent all that money because the Profiles are repeated in TDoS book (which you'd then need to buy for any updates/new profiles - for instance, armour for those Dwarves not given it. There's posters of Fili and Kili in chainmail floating around, so it's a good bet that they'll get new options and equipment.) You'd loose out on the AUJ scenarios in that case, but it'd be up to you if you feel they are worth the price.

Great to see someone getting into the Hobby! Good luck and we're all here if you need anything :)

The EFGT set is great and the rulebook in it is more than enough to get started :) With that, you can run an army of "Thorin's Company" whilst you learn the game which is some points range really! All hero armies aren't always the most competitive in the long run but you'll have lot's of fun!

Thorin, Dwalin and Balin from the set can also be used a heroes to lead war bands in an "Army of Thor" list. Just a couple of boxes of warriors of erebor, grim hammers or warriors of dale and you're good to go :)

And add a box or two of Goblin town goblins and maybe a captain to the EFGT Goblins and you've got another army ready to go!

Not fancy either? Even if you just pick up EFGT for the rules, you'll be able to sell on parts of the set you don't want on ebay easy enough and PROBABLY make your money back by selling items individually :)

Let us know how you get on, but best advice is always go for the army you enjoy the theme of and like the look of most!

Welcome to the hobby!

The EFGT set is great for it's price! And it's definiatly not worth buying the big rulebook (I did, still regret it ... I found absolutely NO use for it)

I bought both the hardback rulebook and EfGT. Never regretted it. By then I have a hunter Orc and an erebor army so I need the profiles. Both are DEFO worth it IMO but it really depends on how much disposable income you have.

Thanks for all the great tips and advice you have given, it is very much appreciated. I plan on getting escape from goblin town to get to grips with the rules and then paint them up whenever the time arises. I think i will wait until after Christmas however before deciding which army to build as a few of you have advised above the new DoS releases should be coming in December and those might tempt me. I also went out and checked out the army builder from lonely knights which is extremely useful so thank you Denizen. However, i think i will mostly certainly make an elf army of some sorts to begin with as i was always a fan of the elves when i watched the lotr movies when i was younger. Anyhow, thanks for the help, i'm very grateful. :D

You no longer need the big hardback rulebook, as all the profiles are on the GW website, under 'hobbit articles'
