Post subject:  Tips for a new GC player

Hi all, i have just started with lotr and i am wondering what to take with my grey company to give them some survivability, like an eagle or something like that. I only have one condition, it has to make sense in the fluff,. (im going for a guardians of the shire sort of thing)

Many thanks JOH177

....Galadhrim Court? Grey Company? Please don't use abbreviations like this as they are so easy to misconstrue.

GC = Grey Company, always has been :)

GC isn't quite the powerhouse it used to be. It went from "no fun for anybody" to "nerfed". I can only suggest allies...Elves, Gondor, etc. If you have enough points, then Eagles become viable, but you pretty much have to take Gwaihir first.

If its guardians of the shire your going for then Gildor is a very obvious option. Otherwise its high elves with either the twins or glorfindel. Or even tom bombadil for some funny spice!

What about something like the knights of rivendell?

The only problem there is you end up with a very low model count, though I'm sure it would still be fun. Gildor and some Noldorin exiles is a great idea thematically, and should work well if you're prepared to learn how to use what are effectively wood elves

After some research online i may go with a rivendell army maybe with the grey company as allies once i get to higher point levels, what would you suggest for rivendell at 500pts?

Are you thinking High Elves (Rivendell and Eregion) or Elrond's Household because they are both separate lists.

I would advice Erestor because his a cheap hero relative to the High Elf Heavy hitters like Glorfindel, Twins, Elrond and Gil-Gilad and on a bonus Erestor has a nice special rule. But if you love a power hero like me pick Glorfindel mounted with armour of gondolin and you cant go wrong!

Erestor
- 12 High elves

Rivendell Knight Captain
- 5 knights

Fill in the extra points with Rangers of the North (mounting them would be great as well)

Also who is better with the elves, Gandalf or radagast?

Gandalf is good. What exactly are you trying to do the topic seems to go many directions.

Are you making Grey company with elven allies? if so how many points?

Sorry for the confusion (even i got a little confused as to what i was doing) after speaking to my friends (who i be playing against) grey company would be better,
so GC with probably K.o.Rivendell and either radagast or gandalf.

Oh and also to start with it will be 500pts but it may rise to 700

I've just been thinking and i came up with this,
Radagast the brown (leader)

6 rangers of the north w- spears

24 rangers of arnor 12 w- spears

Rivendell knight captain

5 Rivendell knights

700pts 8 Might 18 bows (6 elf) 22 models (ive seen smaller, one of my friends had a 2 model list) and would it be 10-11 break point?

Well I hope youre a great player.

Honest opinion and most I think would agree......
If you are making a high point Knighhts of Rivendell and underpowered Grey company, adding in a Wizards pt cost and magic, you better be good at the game.

My suggestion would not be to take this. Your only close combat models are very expensive points wise. The whole point of Grey Company is the archery, but you have the best archers in the game, being elves. So, I dont like the blend. If you like the fluff Id suggest maxing out the Grey company Rangers and taking a few solid high elf heros good in combat with a bunch of elves with spear shield and some with elven blades.

Is that a suggestion youre looking for? I can write up an army idea if you give me a pts value on your force. How many Knights of Rivendell?

i would appreciate an army idea (since i don't have a clue whats useful or not) but could you maybe squeeze an istari in?

Many thanks JOH177

The problem with GC can be summed up with this statistic:
Arathorn, 3 rangers of the north, and 12 rangers with spear are 258 points.

The model count is so pathetically low for str 2 bows at fight 4, even uber armies like elves and dwarves can outnumber grey company. I would not take rivendell knights with the GC. If anything i would swap the GC for a pure rivendell knight force, atleast that way your game wont be a constant moving back + shooting exercise.

if im honest it's more for the fluff (im not playing competetive just with some friends) and the fact i could get lots of shots off each turn
