This is probably a dumb question, but giving someone a shield adds 1 to their defense rating, correct ? If you are a D4, and you add a shield, you then become D5, right ? I'm assuming so, because otherwise, why would you ever spend the point to add the shield ? I have the Hobbit SBG rulebook, but couldn't find info on this anywhere... thanks |

You are correct in saying this. The extra point is for the extra defense. Unless you buy a bow too. Then you can't get the extra defense. The rules are found in the wargear section. |
