Because there are no opponents around here for me, I'm thinking about rules to play alone.
Does anyone have any ideas for me on how to play SBG alone.

I'm thinking about an aggressive play style for my opponent, just rush forward and attack/shoot what they see.

that sounds like a pretty good idea, I think a while back someone on here had a whole set of rules they had for playing by themselves, not sure what the post was called though I'm afraid.
I find by playing solo that you want to use all your favorite models against each other so you put tactics into playing on either side though as you want your new hero you just painted etc. to do well and not be killed at the start.
You could try to kill the highest points model I guess, e.g. trying to kill theoden or aragorn and then you would get the realism of troops trying to defend their king etc. Or pouring all forces towards the objective without a strategy could work.
But I think your aggressive idea sounds like really a good one. :legolas:

I just find the idea of playing alone at home with your miniatures to be sad, but hey whatever makes you happy in the comfort of your own home. I often contemplated playing WHFB alone for the sole purpose of learning the game and how my troops work with their special rules & tactics so that eventually I would be able to kick my friend's @$$ who always happens to cream me.

So moving along with suggestions with playing alone, I suggest creating a form of "Artificial Intelligence", which is what I think you had in mind, for your opposition where you force one side to abide by certain rules of engagement. So this opposition side would have to follow zoning rules and maybe some specific enemies would be more free roaming.

So say example: You control The Fellowship and you act in any which way that you like to complete the scenario objective like escorting Frodo safely to the other side of the table. Your opposition would be orcs and you can have them set up in a way in terms of squads and each squad stays within an area specific zone until they're aggravated by your Fellowship. And you can have rules in the way they attack that you must have them abide by, not by your own free will and strategy. And finally you can have Wraiths whose sole objective is to hunt Frodo and ignore every other member of the Fellowship unless there is left no choice.

So this way you are not really playing against yourself since your force must strategize against the "A.I." you formulated for the opposition, and the opposition must abide by those rules instead of having you coming up with a counter strategy for the strategies you already thought up of for the other force you control. Otherwise it will be like playing chess against yourself, you already know what your opponent is thinking, which what partially makes playing alone pretty sad.

It would be ok for having a little fun or getting used to a special rule but it couldnt be done to work on tactics, even if you made AI rules... you know exactly what the opponent will do every single turn. And you couldnt just play both sides straighr up because you still know what the other guy will do, plus you will probably subconciously favour one side.

^Agreed. Plus don't have your parents or girlfriend/boyfriend walk in on you. Or anyone else by that matter.

That's a definite must. I won't deny I've been caught playing by myself (almost said with myself). It is very hard to pull off a good game though because you always end up supporting one side or another.

I'm asking a serious question, and somehow you are talking about masturbating...

It is difficult indeed to play with 2 sides against each other, because I do have my preferences which side I like more or not.
For example, if I play with my Easterlings against my Gondorians I like one side better at that moment and the enemy will recklessly charge the other side.
I know my strategies and I can flank the enemy but how do I react to that?

I have a scatter dice from 40k/fantasy, perhaps that can be used to control the "enemy".

I think if you don't have anyone to play against in your area then why not play alone? The amount these figures cost you may as well.

On the occasions where I have played alone all I've done is try to think in terms of what the best move for the side with priority is and then react to those moves with the other side (probably not as technical an answer as you were looking for but thats my take on it). The bias is a big problem though, invariably Aragorn survived in my games

I have a lot of miniatures, around the 4 complete armies.
So playing against myself isn't that big a problem.

The biggest problem is knowing my own strategies and how to counter-act them.

Here's some rules for playing solo (not mine, I might add): http://dogui.wordpress.com/2010/02/15/i ... ules-hack/

As for strategies, I tend to think of a strategy that would go with the army before the battle, and try and adapt the army as the battle progresses

I've downloaded them (I think), but if your computer is giving you a warning try clicking the images and copying them to a word document
