I know this may be a stupid question, but who can lead eagles in the Hobbit SBG? I know with the warband rules that usually a hero from the same faction should lead the warband, but since the eagles are in the rulebook with the rivendell knights, I was wondering if it was possible to have an elven hero lead the regular eagles.

They are part of the Wanders in the Wild list, so they can be lead by Gwaihir, Treebeard, the Ghan-buri-ghan or even Bilbo leading them.

They are also in the 'Radagast's alliance' list (which means that Radagast or Gwaihir can lead lead them)

So it's not possible for Gandalf or Elrond to lead eagles? Dang I wish they could. But the Radagast alliance is an idea and I'll definitely take that into consideration. Thanks Beowulf and Sid!

What about Gwahir?

Gwahir is awesome, and I've already decided that for the time being he will lead my eagles in my good army. I just wanted to have another option besides him to lead eagles. So for example, in my mordor army, I could use a troll chieftain to lead a warband of trolls. But I don't always want to use the chieftain. Instead I might want to use another captain and just have a troll there as a monster in my army. Here I was hoping I could use Elrond or Gandalf from the Hobbit good side armies to lead one eagle and some elves. This way if I want to use a singular eagle on my army I don't have to bring Gwahir every time. Thank you for the responses though guys :).

At GT I played against Jay Claire who fielded something like
Radagast on sleigh with sebastian
Gwaihir
8 Eagles

I battered him but it was domination and I had hobbit goblins n the 3 trolls. Was one of my favourite games just because his army was so cool!

Hey guys, Thanks for letting me know who can lead eagles. I have a pair of them and I'm working on getting them painted soon hopefully. :D

But I have another question that may or may not be obvious for you. I'm wondering again about the warband rules considering the new models that came out. But this time I'm wondering about the Rivendell Knights. I know that they can be lead by Elrond or Lindir that came out with the Hobbit SBG, but I was wondering about other High Elf heroes. My logic behind this is that Elrond has three different "ranges" of models to pick from, but the new one from the Hobbit can lead Rivendell Knights, and the older ones lead High Elves from Eregion and Rivendell. But aren't the Rivendell Knights basically the mounted version of High Elves? So my actual question, if I could ever get to the point, is if I have a model like Glorfindel, or Elladan/Elrohir, can they lead Rivendell Knights since they can lead High Elves? As of right now I'm assuming they would have no problem but I've been wrong on these assumptions before and I just wanted to make sure with people here because there is no better place to go to for Lotr and the Hobbit SBG questions :)

at this current moment in time? Nope. Rivendell Knights are their only little list and can only be led by Elrond, Lindir and Knight Captains.

In the future? Maybe...probably not though

So I guess Rivendell Knights aren't a part of the Eregion and RIVENDELL army lists. Grr Games Workshop ... Grr ...
My High Elf heroes can't lead Rivendell Knights and a Galadhrim/Mirkwood Elf hero can't lead eagles. (Although at least the eagles one makes sense.)

They come under the Elronds Household list. Same for all the new hobbit stuff, all new army lists now. For example, Thror cant lead khazad guard, the goblin king cannot lead moria goblins. All have to be taken as allies.

Just a quick one, but has anybody got a comparison handy for the new Gwahir and new eagles models? Is Gwahir bigger, or is it just the pose that is different?

New Eagles and Gwaihir are MUCH bigger. 2inches roughly

Thanks Cereal :) but I mean is new Gwaihir bigger than new Eagles? Or is it just the pose that is different (and the fact Gwaihir is finecast)

Ahh he is roughly the same size.

Gwahir is the model closest. Old Gwahir on the left. New eagles x3

Thanks Cereal! I'd been wondering for a while, having it in mind that unless there was anything that particularly distinguished Gwahir from the other eagles, would there be any reason the new eagle boxset models couldn't be used as Gwahir legally?

If you did an obvious paint job... but some people might take issue.
I think for a small tournament no one will mind but at a larger one people would usually ask that the model is the model

Thank you for clarifying SouthernDunedain. I hope that the Elrond's Household list at least grows a little bit and we get some new Elves in a box of 12 :)
I think my confusion on the issue was because of a game I played at my local GW store, where my opponent fielded Gimli and had him lead 12 Grimhammers, so I was thinking that elven heroes could lead the Rivendell Knights.

In all fairness, Gimli can't actually lead 12 Grimhammers because he is not in the same army list, so your opponent was cheating in a way. Thorin could lead them, Thror could lead them, but Gimli can't because he's not in the army of Thror list.
