Post subject:  Who's a Monster?

Hey, so on the topic of Monsters. I've found that the rules never state what defines a monster to be a monster which has led to complications. I understand a monstrous mount is only considered so if he has 6 strength.

Does anything with the name "monster" in brackets count as a monster because I'd quite fancy my Spiders being able to launch an opponent a couple inches into another. Or the equal alternative of points for a Half-troll but that would be a little overpowered.

The Warg Chief has as much strength as a troll and although it does not say Monster, does he still get access to the abilities? He could, probably, eat a guy thrash about then throw him as much as anyone else could. I've never used my Warg Chief as a monster but recently playing, I wanted to knock guys 3 inches back then move to attack but I found myself thinking "hmm, what defines a monster?"

So to conclude, does a Monster gain access to monstrous abilities based on the name in brackets, the strength value or is it just made obvious where obvious and if not obvious how can we tell the difference?

Help!

The monster must have the brackets that say monster. Strength etc play 0 part in determining that. Spiders, Wargs, bats, etc are not monsters as they do not expressly state it.

So the list would read:

Dragons/Drakes
Fellbeasts
Eagles
Ents
Giants
Mumakils
Shelob
Trolls

Would this be the correct list?

You know just before I fell asleep last night I thought I forgot the Balrog! Worse I have one squirreled away somewhere in my flat.

So I'll update the list here;

Balrog
Dragons/Drakes
Dwellers in the Dark
Fellbeasts
Eagles
Ents
Hill Troll Chieftain Buhrdur
Giants
Goblin King, the Hobbit one
Great Beast of Gorgoroth
Gûlavhar, the Terror of Arnor
Mumakils
Shelob
The Watcher in the Water
Trolls

Is the Spider Queen really classed as a monster? What about the Necromancer and Sauron are they classed as characters or monsters?

Hey what about Shades are they classed as monsters?

They won't in the next round of FAQs. It was mentioned to Simon Grant at the recent battle brothers and he said that it would be rectified in the next FAQ although he did say they wouldn't be out for a while. Can only be a good thing IMO, been hurled by a chariot was frankly ridiculous.

Yes, but barge seemed like a good fit, and might actually make chariots worth something.
