If the King's Champion and Herald are in base to base contact but are fighting different fights, does the King's champion still benefit from the Herald's fate bonus, provided at the time they are still in base to base contact?

In the rules it explicitly states that different fights should be separated -even by the smallest possible distance. Therefore I would say that the Champion, and the Heralds lose their bonuses -since they are no longer in base contact- if they are engaged in different combats.

Okay, follow up question:

if the two heralds are behind the king's champion in phalanx formation and the king loses the fight, is he considered trapped because only one unit can make way?

I don't agree with the first answer only because that's referring to breaking off fights to show whose fighting each other.
But as for question 2 it would depend on how you positioned them. You could very well have 1 make way and be fine

Something to consider - they should get their bonuses as it is an implied way of enforcing the rules of separation of combats vs how it is actually worded/ placed on the board; however, if the champ's force doesn't have priority (to decide the order of combats) and they lose fights, they risk being trapped. If looked at from a piece design perspective, the king's champ and his heralds are very stout yet are at a disadvantage in that they have to stay in contact to receive the benefits.

Thank you all for the answers,

For specificity, question 2 referred to a King's champion with the two heralds behind him in phalanx formation. Because they don't partake in the combat is he trapped?

More importantly, is there a consensus on both questions?

You do not have to be involved in the combat to make way.
And the KC still gets the bonus. You do not have to make space between friendly models to show seperate combats

In page 23 of the rulebook: "Always separate the combats a little, so that the Fights actually have a little distance between them".

Whether simply for clarity's sake or not, the fights must be separated.

I agree with JamesR on this one, you can't just go moving bases to suit yourself, even if the rulebook suggests that you do so. There is so much strategy based on where people are, moving it wherever you want takes the "strategy" out of SBG.

After re- reading the section mentioned I still don't think moving friendlies is necessary. That line indicates so only when taken out of context IMO. The term "separating fights" is a poor choice of wording by GW because technically Fili and Kili in base contact with each other (back to back) fighting enemies that are in front of them (1 on 1) are separated fights. Fili and Kili do not have spears nor can they contribute an attack to each other in any way, therefore while the models are touching the combats are already separate, so there's no need to move them.

I think this is a case where they've streamlined the new book too much, as older editions were more specific in this area, and I feel like this book expects you to have read the older cores because otherwise there's lots of gaps in the rules

If they were in a line one behind the other though, with no way of moving sideways (e.g., in a chasm or something) then they Champion would definately be trapped as only one friendly model can make way.
