Y'all can get by playing with that rulebook at home and amongst friends although members of this forum will tell you to purchase the new Hobbit SBG rulebook as it is updated.

I'd recommend playing a few friendly games with the old rulebook to be sure that he's still interested.

The most notable change from 2004 to today is that for every 12 warriors, you need a hero to lead them. These are the warbands of your army and you can have heroes that don't lead any warriors if you wish not, but every non-hero miniature will need to be in a warband led by a hero.

If you all play friendly games with each other you can use the old rule book of course. There are rumors that a new updated rulebook will be released this year so it is better to wait it out for a few months and check the news of the hobby before buying the current rulebook.
