Thanks all for the useful discussion. I think we will probably go with the knockdown without the bonus attacks for a couple points. Good rationale and distinguishes from cavalry. I like the idea of tying it to strength 6 too, do you find it fair though with no point changes?

I love Tolkien, and I don't mind if people want to "real up" his world. I don't though, I love the fantasy! Mumakil are awesome even if physically impossible, I'm a physicist not a biologist so don't know about wolf type animals the size of horses except that there was one in earth's history. Not sure how it moved/acted though.

Not the Drid Pack when it was first re-intruduced into Yellowstone, they had an alpha male and female, but it was the female 'the Dark Queen' that was their leader, until her sister tok her place. Feel free to watch that programme, it was on quite a few years ago. but your right in most cases, you always get an exception.

An Mr Simmuskhan, Tolkien's is one of the most realistic fantasies out there.

I should have said most of the time, they're led by an alpha male.

I guessed you did, I just wanted to mention the Druid pack, sorry for the mispelling too.

If you compare a warg chieftan to the spider queen, who are equal points, then it is criminal NOT to add the cavalry rules. Wargs can be effective without the knockdown etc, aslong as your opponent doesn't choose to hole up in a building, and even then all you need are a couple of spiders to flush them out.

Not anymore. SQ is quite a bit more expensive in the new profiles. Still worth it though.

As whfrog says, SQs now cost 40pts more, and that IMO makes the Warg Chieftain actually okay now, if it suites your theme.

That's actually quite good news, i always got a bit of stick for using the chieftan over the queen when she was better but now maybe that won't be the case :) Have wargs not been altered at all then? If not i'm really suprised, they're probably even more of a challenge to use than warriors of rohan, who i have heard have also heard negative changes :/

Actually, the only new disadvantage for WoR is that Outriders cost the same as a WoR with a bow, but are so much better (I'm not sure how long the Outriders have existed, as I never owned LoME). But in my opinion, Rohan infantry had negative changes the first time GW made profiles (no spears!... but of course they have throwing spears).

Wargs need no changes IMO.

Wow, this thread's back!

I've always enjoyed the WWC and have also got comments on how it would be better to use the spider queen, so I'm also glad that the points have been adjusted.

Gotta say that nowhere did I imply that the wargs NEEDED changes, just a house rule to make them work more like we saw in the movies, and more like what the models actually look like. Since even a large dog can knock down a man, I figure that a warg could easily do it (http://lotr.wikia.com/wiki/Warg). Talking to a GW employee, he suggested that they were always meant to have the knockdown because they were wargs and the extra attack due to the rider, but that it was simplified for the rules. In any case, it's meant for some fun as a house rule and I really don't mean to imply that I think they should be changed for everyone, play with what's fun I say. We like the changes for the cinematography of it all. And don't mention the size comparison between the great eagles and a person!

Hi Gothmog,

If you're interested in realistic fantasies, if you haven't already read David Gemmell's books you might enjoy them. I read "Legend" a LONG time ago (late 80s) and it was so different to the other fantasy novels I had read at the time that I immediately read it for a second time!

I also liked the Belgariad by David Eddings, I remember when I first read them, mid 80s, I wrote a book report for them in school and said something about how realistic the books were as they discussed how horses were treated, how long it took to travel distances etc. I think the first book is "Pawn of Prophecy".

Tad Williams and his Memory, Sorrow and Thorn you might also enjoy. I think the first book is "The Dragonbone Chair".

Some of Lawhead's semi-historical fantasy is pretty realistic too.

Anyway, you might enjoy them too, if you haven't already read them!

Thank you for the recommendations, I haven't read them yet, I've heard of David Eddings, but never read him, I'll pop around later for some books next week I think. Cheers.
