I am thinking about getting a mumak, and I can't decide what guys to put in the Howdah. What guys serve best in the howdah?

bowmen, and bowmen only - forget about spearmen, they are useless up there, you want them below in combat.

Alternatively, fill it with half trolls, then get the mumak into combat, let the trolls use the grappling lines to get down, then... death to the people below - easy really. Just don't let the mumak get pinned.

Half-Trolls, Ropes and Rocks.

Costs a small fortune in points (and cash) but it will hit very hard.

I also have a question. Does it cost points to put guys on the Mumak, or does the Mumak come with them on. Also, how many half trolls can you put on the Mumak? The half trols ideais good, and also the watchers of karna.

You pay only for the models themselves- it doesn't come with them. It comes with a Haradrim Chieftain on top, and that's all.

Half-trolls are an infantry base, so as many as would normally fit up there (12 models total, I think?).

It is all about your own tactic. If you only want to tramp the enemey warriors you only have to put on some warriors ( 2 or 3)who can replace your captain. a set of 3 watchers of karna would be very good. they can have bows and are resistant to magic.

Only when you give the mumak rappelling lines you could put some Half trolls etc in the howdaw. But for small battles i wouldn't do that. you spend all the points on one model. if the opponent got some luck your mumak must run of the table without ever come to combat and never get lost of the models in the Howdaw.

Yeah, it looks impressive to have a bunch of warriors up there but serves very little to the game. And after having a couple stampede rolls go against me and see several of those warriors fall to their doom I have to say it's not even worth "protecting" them by having them up there.

I agree that, if you have the points, giving the Mumuk repelling lines and putting some tough warriors up there would be great. Use the beast to get where you want, drop everyone off and get away (so you don't end up squishing your own men if you stampede  ). Such a force of a few Watchers, Half Trolls and Spearmen for support would be a most unwelcome surprise in the enemy lines after having just been damaged heavily by a charging Mumuk. That would probably take a game of 700 points or more to make really worth it and I haven't played Harad that high yet.

Normally I'd say only put your bowmen up there. If the commander is killed one can take his place and in the mean time they can help address nearby cavalry or support troops. If you are short on bows then several basic warriors and invest in the "Rocks" upgrade. That helps a lot for dealing with situations when someone tries to charge you...again maybe focus on the spear support if any.

do rappeling lines work both ways, climbing up or down the Mumak.

Nope. Down only. No risk of Legolas getting up there and killing everyone. :-D

What a shame!! Though Legolas was so nimble and didn't need ropes to climb up :P , but that could have been more logic, exciting and realistic :-X

Don't use Half-Trolls and Rocks. Half-Trolls have a horrible Shoot Value. Mahûd are much better. However, remember that Ropes are not a free descent. You still have to pass a D6 roll - I've lost my fair share of Mahûd falling down the ropes

The biggest problem with the Rocks is the range is relatively short. Its great for knocking off spear supporters though!!

Ok so I am thinking either just plain bows, or Watchers of Karna with bows.

In my mind, the biggest problem with Watchers of Karna is you are paying an extra point for the models 2 attacks. Without ropes he can never take advantage of those extra attacks. The extra "to hit" bonus on shooting is nice but you are still not getting your full value on the Watcher.

how bout I put rope with karna. Then I can utilize there 2 attacks

No, Arbalesters may not go in the Mumak. If they could, that would be utterly amazing. I believe it's only Harad models- Half-trolls, Mahud, Haradrim, Watchers of Karna, etc.

You could do ropes. Shoot and then get into the fray. I would do rocks, but Brent has a point. It may be worth only throwing normal Haradrim in there.
