Post subject:  hobbit pony tactics

hi guys i was just looking at the cavalry rules for the lotr sbg yesterday and i read about mounting. At reading this i realised that hobbit armies could be so much more dangerous. For Example its the scenario kill a king, your leader merry is mounted on a horse with an elven cloak. So you could dismount him making him safe and then Farmer Maggot could go on in his place. 2 wounds, 2 fate and a 2 handed weapon moving 8" seems good to me. Also you want to disrupt the enemy lines when breaking so you dismount pippin and put on lobelia and send her riding into the enemy lines with the other mounted heroes.

If there is anything wrong with this tactic or anything that could be improved please reply.

Thx in Advance,
Halfwit

you'd have to agree with your opponent that the horses do not simply run away once they are dismounted. (as is the case normaly)

I don't think you can use 2H weapons when mounted. Anyway, because of the special rules that ponies have, I don't think it would be much better to use them anyway. Just get lots of them and gandalf :-D

You may not dismount units and put a other model on.

Why would you pay for a pony AND an Elven cloak to begin with?

Also, to echo, you may NOT use a 2h-weapon while mounted and anything that isn't a warg runs away as soon as the rider is gone.

Also, yes, you have a fast moving 2-h weapon... which needs to take a courage test before charging and is still only a Hobbit.

And I don't know if I'd want Lobelia to be such a target on a horse anyway...

I mean, if you houserule that horses stay, that's all well and good. But I don't see a large advantage to this re-mounting or a way to make it better.

hmmm im not sure about that.
A) you would take the elven cloak so merry is hidden from view when unmounted.
B)There is a rule that lets you keep mounts in if your opponent agrees. It is in scenario specific rules. Also where does ot state you cant have a two handed weapon on a horse. Gandalf has.
C) You would hide lobelia until there force is breaking and by that time the hobbit archers will have taken out most of the enemy bowfire.
D) It is not a houserule

thx for all of the comments guys it has definitely made me have a think about it. I think i will still try it for fun.

Thx all

If your opponent has to agree to an aspect of the game that goes outside the given rules...it's a house rule.

And you can HAVE a 2-handed weapon while mounted, but you can't use it. Look under the two-handed weapon rules again.

My point on the first one is that you should probably take either and Elven cloak OR a pony. You can get two-three more models with those points. Personally, I'd choose the Elven cloak.

As The newbie said, it IS a houserule. Try it in a tournament-like setting. You won't get far.

And I still don't think that it'd be worth it, or make hobbit armies much deadlier. They're plenty deadly with maxed numbers, archers, Dunedain, and Gandalf.

Thx guys for comments but hobbits can only have very few fast moving things and i intend to maximise these few things by having the deadliest stuff on ponies. However i think this would work in a tournament setting because how many of you have played against a mounted lobelia or farmer maggot ? It would be hilarious and thats the point.

Thx

Actually there is a loophole which would let Maggot (or any other hobbit) take over Merry's pony:
Step 1: Give Merry pony and Elven Cloak
Step 2: Put other hobbit as a passenger
Step 3: Dismount Merry leaving other hobbit in charge of pony

Even if your opponent agrees to allow passengers, which is often not allowed in tournaments, the rule is that if the rider dismounts the horse, the passenger is automatically thrown. That's in one of the FAQs.
