Post subject:  Creating Profiles

I am interested in created profiles as stated by my bland title. I would like to change some profiles I think GW didn't do justice to and I would like to create some of my own. What do i do to go about doing this fairly? No overly extravagant changes will be made, just small ones and some creation. I was inspired by Highlordell and whafrog's creations and would like to try. So, how do i do it fairly?

There are a couple of resources you can use for creating house profiles.

First, a good rule of thumb is that Might, Will, and Fate are worth 5 points apiece.

Second, if you have the battle companies rules you can add up the point value of a character - it gives points/stat. Stat increases are worth more if it's a hero (in this case, defined by having a combined Wounds and Attacks that excedes 3).

Third, is the old LotR Cost Calculator. I think it was based on the Return of the King rulebook, but it's generally pretty balanced. You pick your race, whether it's a hero or not, and then adjust stats as you wish.

Lastly, in my opinion there's always something to be said for just eyeballing it and going with your gut. If your guy has a ton of special rules or equipment, but he's not actually going to use out of all of them in any given game, then you could knock a few points off to avoid punishing him too much for his versatility.

Hope that helps!

I also use the battle company rules for calculating point costs, with one slight difference. Rather than using the base cost of the warrior, I compare my hero's stats to that of a similar balanced hero (some GW heroes are unusually cheap or expensive for their stats. While this may be fair for that hero, it may not be for your new hero. Captains are always a safe to base your heroes on though).

I don't know where you can find the battle company rules these days, so if you can't track them down I'll summarise it here. F, S, D, C, M/W/F all cost 5pts for heroes, 1pt for warriors (when upgrading courage for warriors, pay 1 point if increasing courage value from 2 to 3, but nothing for any other increase. This is how GW seems to do it. You should still charge 5pts per point of courage for heroes though). A, W both cost 10pts for heroes, 2pts for warriors. Special rules can be more difficult, so you will need to use your own intuition for that.

Wow i influenced someone, :o

The cost calculator is your best bet at the moment, and also use the other information given in the previous replies, then just run it over it in your mind. Compare it with other things that cost the same points, count the higher and lower characteristics and see if it seems fair in your opinion, finally just post it on here and we'll point out any problems we can find.

Good luck! :)

Hurumith, if I had a gold coin, I would give it to you.
I have been searching for that one for ages.

Thank you very much!

While I was fiddling around with that LotR Cost Calculator, I "downgraded" a Hobbit as much as possible. So, he had this profile:

F-1/6+ S-1 D-1 A-1 W-1 C-1

And...

Points Cost: -6

(that's what I call a competitive army)

This raises a good point. You should be careful when making profiles for warriors who cost 5 points or less. The reason is quite simple, you take 1 point off, you can suddenly field 25% more troops. Take another off and you can get 67% more. Another and it becomes 150%. When you are dealing with small points values, a small change makes a big difference. You may need to reduce two (or more) stats to justify the points decrease if you feel the need to do this.
