Does it make sense to never have an Indomitable formations >1 unless you want them to hold particular defensible terrain?

yes it does as if u keep them close and move them together instead of getting 8attack and one supporting your going to have to fight every company with the full attacks and for example gving opportunaties to counter charge cavalry if u get priority in the next turn and again u can pin a nasty enemy in place for longer and keep in combat only what u want fighting thinking bout it now it would b quite strategic but costly in pionts

It is but it still refers to tactics so I think this can slide IMO.
