Hi Craig I'm back!

Doctor Who quotes aside, after a long pause (or more accuratly, becoming pretty good in Malifaux) I took up my Wood Elves again for a tournament this saturday in ANtwerp, Belgium.

Now, I'm rusty, and have never been a very good player, so decided to take a funlist at 500 points

It goes like

Thranduil
1 Sentinel
10 Mirkwood Guard (elven cloaks, throwing dagger, 4 spears)

Legolas (elven cloak)
1 Sentinel
6 Mirkwood Guard (elven cloaks, 2 throwing daggers, 4 elven bows)

So every model has an elven cloak, every model has a missile weapon, and every model has either Sh2+, 3 shots, or magic and 2A.

Drawback, I am hideously outnumbered regardless what I'll be facing

So bets are on, precisely how much will I be slaughtered for pretending WE should cost 16points apiece :p
(I'm already sorry there will be no Lords of Battle :p)

Ah well, more after the tournament, though if people have recommendations to moderate the damage with this list, I'm open to it :) (though I wish Gildor had been in the Wood Elf list, then I'd have had Noldorin Exiles rather the Mirkwood Guard :p)

Too many elven cloaks, elven cloaks are only useful if you can partially obscure the target.
So at any one time im sure one model will be targetable. As such this list fails.

I would trop most of the cloaks and get legolas' group up to 12 models as a priority.

I thought elven cloaks also made it impossible to target you anything farther than 12" or something?

Only if you're partially obsured. So long as there is a single tree or somethingon the field, they can be great. If you're set on using this list, at least split the warbands up evenly between father and son.

Nope. Anything farther than 6 can't see you unless you are COMPLETELY visible. Inside 6 they are useless... a front line of dudes in the open 20" away are still visible with cloaks. They need to be farther than 6 AND partially obscured from view to have effect. Also, they have zero effect if mounted.

I agree... cloaks on everyone= quite a few wasted points.

Yeah I thought so

I'm just tired of everyone saying that WE with elven cloaks are so awesome, and that by not taking them I'm not playing them right.

Now I'll show them why I think Cloaks are overpriced on infantry basic troops (minus keymodels)

Though to be fair, coming from a mainly Malifauxcommunity, chances are we'll get lots of terrain :)

They, whoever "they" may be; are confusing LotR with WotR. In WotR you can't even be seen in the open over 12" if you have cloaks. Unfortunately in SBG cloaks are pretty useless, except on heroes.

Cloaks are good, but only on archers, who will be hiding the entire game.

So result of the day:

1 hypotheses confirmed, elven cloaks indeed are too expensive

2 High Ground, and Hold ground both are very very harsh on elite armies, escpeccialy when Lords of Battle get scrapped because it advantages elite armies to hard

3 Throwing daggers are ultracool, I'm starting to think to even take them on the archers as well.

4 Mirkwood Guard seems to help out a lot, though I'm not sure wether I got true value out of it, it's not going to be too far off.

5 Tournaments should have more the 5 small pieces of terrain on a 48"x48" table, and it's even worse if they are cliffs, so you either see the whole model, or nothing at all :o

1 agreed
2 I don't agree. So long as the elite armies get to the middle first, My dwarf ironguard/kazad guard army is a winner for that mission.
3 AGREED but not on archers
4 yeah but i'd still rather have more men and a horn on a bowman
5 at GT we had 2 hills, 3 woods, 2 buildings on most tables.

A powerful force, if used correctly. Use your Elven Cloaks to fight as Skirmishers, sneaking past the enemy to kill their vulnerable units. Consider adding some Spearmen to provide some more muscle.
